I'm in the midst of the application process to law school, so I thought it'd be a good time to ask where y'all went, and how it worked out for you. Thanks much in advance!

1. Who, me?
I went to a private, Methodist school in my state. Some of my professors got their JDs at Harvard, Yale, George Washington, Phi Beta Kappa, bla bla bla, so I felt pretty good about it.

I was fortunate in that I had a place to live and did not have to work. I am amazed at people who go through law school while working, with families and kids, etc., because I don't think I would have made it under those circumstances.

You have to go into law school prepared to do whatever it takes to make it through, the whole three years. If you don't, you will flunk out or quit. We lost 2/3 of our first year class to attrition.

I didn't really have a "plan" for after law school; I did it for the education. I was 37 when I graduated so I was not attracted to working/slaving at a law firm (they probably weren't attracted to me, either).

I am a solo practitioner specializing in family law and it is a wild ride. ;)

Good luck!

2. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in May 2005
Despite the stress, I LOVED law school. You'll hear the saying, "The first year they scare you to death. The second year they work you to death. The third year they bore you to death." Every word of it is true. The first year is the worst; people are competing for grades (although it wasn't much of a problem at my school, there were some obnoxious individuals whom I'm happy to never have to see again). You make friends who will see you through thick and thin and will be lifelong friends (although I only graduated in May, I know this to be true). The Socratic method will challenge and frighten you at first, but after 1L you don't much care about being called on because you're no longer afraid to make a fool of yourself.

Unfortunately I failed the Texas bar exam on my first attempt, but I don't blame the school for any of that; I didn't work hard enough. Some of my classmates passed the New York and California bars, the two hardest exams, on the first try. I plan to take it again next month and until I pass (I only get 5 attempts in Texas, so I'd better bust my butt!) I want to go into family law or legal aid once I pass the bar.

You will get a first-rate education at Pitt Law should you choose to apply there. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. Good luck!
