Poll question: Which Camaro would you revisit?
In http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x4556268 we learned that GM is showing a "concept" Camaro at the North American International Auto Show. This is what it looks like:

Fantasy time: You are an engineer at General Motors. You are tasked with creating three cars that will revitalize GM.

Because you're a good liberal, one is a hybrid.

Because you're a practical liberal, one is a copy of DaimlerChrysler's Sprinter van.

And because you're a liberal who thinks teenage boys still need to get laid, one is a revisitation of the classic Camaro.

But which classic Camaro?

The first generation...

The second generation...

The third generation...

Or the fourth generation...

3. A 75 Camero
was my 1st car. God I loved that car. I was 18, it was 1980 and my mother and grandfather went shopping for cars for me while I was at work. They thought the best choice was a 76 LeBaron with over 80,000 on it, but being 18 I went for the Blue Camero with the White vinyl roof. It had 50,000 but looked great! Big 350 V-8 sure sucked down the gas though. Even had a 8-track tape player!

God, I'm old!

5. I guess my '89 was a third generation...
...I retired her with over 300,000 miles on it. I did my first brake job at around 80,000 miles...
She had a 4 speed manual and a small 6 cylinder. I never had to do transmission work, but did rebuild the clutch once, and for 4 years in a row I drove her every week day... 100 miles to and from Santa Barbara..
She was the most perfectly balanced car (body, drive-train and engine) I ever drove.

I never went to the side of the road with her, not once..... I called her Missy..

6. I'd take any of them...
...but forget the hybrid and go with a turbodiesel. Diesels deliver better performance and fuel economy than hybrids.

Oh, and Sprinter vans ROCK!

7. I bet that Sprinter van would make an absolutely perfect
camper / RV conversion. Lots of space (especially vertically) in the back, but still maneuverable.

I'm sure someone has done it already; if they haven't, they should.

16. You know Ford has one?
They don't sell it here, but...I was looking at Ford's website one day and saw something about a Ford air quality initiative in Europe. They showed the vehicle they use...when I saw it I thought to myself, "why in hell is Ford buying Sprinters?" Turns out Ford makes a van they only sell in Europe that looks very much like a Sprinter.

I did a post a while back explaining that I thought DaimlerChrysler needed to get on the ball and start marketing this thing to non-commercial customers. 25mpg in a vehicle that big is real appealing.

8. Camaro? Nah. I'd just bring the price of a Vette down.
It doesn't need to be a luxury anymore. It screams American horsepower, so, let's not compete with Viper and Porsche. Let's go back to handing Mustang owners their asses.

Besides, were it me, I'd bring back the Turbo'd 231 V6 of the Grand National/GNX fame, drop it in something light, and make a mockery of everything on the road...including the Vette.

12. Can they make one with an alternator that works?
My family's had two and we were on a first name basis with the AAA guy and the guy behind the counter at Autozone. :eyes:

I'd settle for an Impala that in some way resembled the kick ass car I grew up in and loved, instead of the boring mommobile they made of it. x(

15. How about a Nippondenso?
Delco alternators have always sucked ass.

In 2004, I was in Idaho for a family reunion and my freeper brother came up in his almost-new Chevrolet pickup. You guessed it: on the way from Coeur d'Alene to St. Maries, the alternator went out and the driver's side power window quit working in the "down" position. Fortunately for him, he got all the way to my parents' house on the battery and it was nice outside.

I told him I was going to fix his alternator problem. "Oh no!!!! I'm going to take it to the DEALER because it's under WARRANTY!!!!" Bob, you stupid shit, the closest Chevy dealer is 65 miles away. Do you intend to PUSH this thing? So we called the dealer and told him what happened. The dealer was a pretty good guy--if you can get the old alternator and the old battery out, bring them in. It's Saturday but we're open until five and the parts department manager only lives ten minutes away. Get here, we'll call him and he'll get you new ones, and we'll schedule the truck for a window repair on Monday.

It took about ten minutes to get all that shit out and in the trunk of mom's car, and off we went. One of my sisters has a cell phone, and we grabbed her and all took off. On the edge of CDA we called the dealer..."we're almost there, get your guy over here and we'll be out of your hair in no time." Now this is really impressive: when we got there, not only was the guy there, he'd pulled the correct parts and had them sitting there waiting for us, and because we were doing the labor ourselves he threw in five quarts of oil and a complete set of filters. (Unfortunately, they wouldn't fit on a Honda...shouldn't the guy actually DOING the labor be the one to get the new parts?)

Not much to tell you after that...full-size GM pickups have lots of room to work under the hood, so repairs are fast and easy. If they'd quit buying shit parts, repairs might not be so necessary.

17. I've always used Delco electronics
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 03:41 AM by Oeditpus Rex
Had a '66 Chevy years ago that ate alternators, but come to find out it was in the wiring, not the alternators themselves. The alternator on my '65 El Camino is the one that was on it when I bought it 24 years ago.

I once got a rebuilt one from Kragen that had six negative diodes instead of three and three. :eyes:

One thing — you've got to keep the older ones lined up properly. If they're a little bit off, the shaft bearings and brushes will wear prematurely. Shim the mounting bracket if you need to.

my dad left me this one in storage

20. i've been a Chevrolet guy for a while now
and I voted for the first gen.....I prefer something lighter and nimbler than the 4th gen....hopefully the concept and finished product will have a much closer 50-50 weight balance, lighter weight, AND a REAL suspension underneath (hopefully multilinks at the front and bakc), unlike the current mustang....

Of couse we know the horsepower will be there, courtesy of GM Powertrain--the best in the business
