"Well we cant start you of at @$22.00/hr, But we can @ $23.00/hr."
Went to Part II of my interview where they gave me a math, english and mechanical test. I must have aced them all. After the test they brought me back into an office and asked me "If you were to be hired here, what wage would you be asking for?". I said to myself, "oh shit! I hate it when they ask this". So I remembered what a friend of mine, who is employed at this yard, telling me that he gets $22.00/hr. We are at the same level of Journeyman so I thought that I'd throw that at him.
After I did he told me that he couldnt possibly start me off at $22.00, but he would at $23.00/hr.

It doesnt get much better than that at an interview.

I have to go back on Wednesday for a 3-hour assessment exam, which I should have no trouble passing.

I'll be making $6.00 an hr more working the shipyards than in nursing. Go figure!

2. Damn! You need massive training to work in that area?
I'm only making 9 bucks an hour where I work (food service).

3. It didnt used to be this way for a shipyard job.
Years ago they'd ask you who you knew and "Can you read a tape measure?", and you'd be in.
I'm looking at 4 interviews/testing dates. Plus the physical/drugscreen.

I guess I'll have to put the herbals away for a few days to flush myself out.

9. Message from an old Mom here, young man...
Stay off the "tested-for substances".. Why jeopardize a fantastic job/future for something like that?

Just think how bad you will/would feel if you lost out on it because of something you did on the weekend?

These days even $7 an hour jobs test for that stuff.. Why trust your future to something you buy at a "head-shop"?

10. I have it covered. The dude at "The Black"(headshop), put a package...
together for me. Its always worked in the past.
My drugscreen will probably be Thursday or Friday, so I will refrain from the herb till after my screen.

5. Congrats, Maveric! Sounds great.
I also hate it when they ask you how much you expect to make. But it sounds like you aced this one!

11. Lucky for me the guy doing the interview was poor at it. He's a foreman...
who is not so hot at interviews. I actually had control of the whole deal.
Not bad for a stutterer!

12. Thanks Peg!
I'm keeping my nursing license for spot, weekend work.
The pain, suffering and death was starting to get to me, so I went back to my old trade of 28 years.

8. Congratulations!
 :highfive:  :woohoo:

It's a great feeling, isn't it? I had a similar exchange re: salary when I was interviewed for the job I now hold in WDC.

What is a journeyman? In the shipyards...? Manual labor? Don't get hurt.

14. A worker that is top of his trade. Experience level.
I have over 28 years experience in shipboard/sheetmetal fabrication. As far as manual labor goes, I'll be detailing blueprints and handing out work orders to the lower yard dogs. At timers I will have to sweat, but I know everyone there and with contacts and experience I'll do as little "manual labor" as possible.
I WILL have to be careful. At least six workers, on the average, get killed at this yard every year.

16. It used to twice that till they cracked down on safety issues.
In 1986 cranes would routinely lift steel baskets full of workers,up to 30 or so would fit in these baskets. One day an overworked crane operator got a little sloppy and he dropped the baskets killing 13 and seriously injuring about 12.
They've made changes since that day.
