Poll question: Will there ever be a congressional hearing without baseball metaphors?
I've been listening to this Alito hearing all day and I'm at the point where if I hear one more baseball reference I'm going to take a bat and bash my own ears in. And it's just day two.

I think it's safe to assume that for the most part these Senators have some brains, some schoolin', and perhaps a large vocabulary at their disposal. And yet, the "everyman" baseball crap continues.

(Note to Senators: Doesn't impress me. Try Apple Pie for a while instead--see how that goes over. :eyes: )

So anyway, will this go on forever, or will they one day come to their senses and knock it off (if only for a little while):

1. It's about as likely as
a pitcher throwing a perfect game with 27 straight strikes.

5. I feel your pain....It irritates the hell out of me....There are other....
metaphors that can be used to make a point. Apparently, though, the good ole boys of the Judiciary Committee (Democratic and Republican) are too ignorant to use anything but baseball to make a point.

7. listen, pal. you wanna diss baseball, the greatest game in human history
and you better not be working too close to second base on the pivot if I'm coming down from first on a grounder to short.

15. LOL......You just try! I'll beat you with my backgammon board, stuff you
with lump crabmeat, and garnish you with fresh cut rosemary and basil. After I finish your "makeover" your own mama won't recognize you!

Not to worry though. I walked off a softball field in 1971 (humiliated and furious) and haven't been back. Not likely you'll see me anywhere in the neighborhood of 2nd base in this lifetime.....

18. Damn! I want that recipe!
Spikes, wrapped in prosciutto, sauteed with jumbo lump crabmeat, with a dusting of freshly grated parmesan.....

Seriously, its just the baseball analogies I dislike. Where the players are concerned, well "Take me out to the ballgame"!

20. actually the parm goes on the inside
and the whole thing is dusted with foul-line chalk.

I bet you miss the days of the skin-tight uniforms.

21. There was a farm team in Jackson (Jackson Mets) some years back
and I'd go and sit with the troublemakers on the 3rd base line. My friend had binoculars and damn near had to force me to give them up!

About the only sport I watch regularly anymore is soccer. Our local Mexican restaurant usually has a game on their wide-screen and damn, just damn. Some of those Hispanic players.......

19. I once did a story on golf metaphors
A linguistics professor I interviewed noted that ours is a society that loves metaphors.

And since few recreations are more ingrained in American hearts, baseball metaphors hit .400 in my book.
