Is there such a thing as pre-antebellum?
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 10:49 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Is all of history antebellum up to the American Civil War, or is there is a distinctly historical period that alone could be called pre-antebellum?

And how did it happen that only the American Civil War gets the moniker antebellum?

Did it get used so much for the Civil War that it simply changed definition to be used only to mean pre-civil war period? Or is the term used for the periods before other wars any more?

The only time I've seen the word used is in reference to the American Civil War, even though it just means "before war".

1. I've just heard the word "antediluvian"
as in, after the flood.

Not what you were lookin' for, but just thought I'd throw it out there, for the hell of it.

Aren't you thrilled?? :eyes:

2. So then we can ask, is there a pre-antediluvian period?

By the way, it means BEFORE the flood, not after. "Ante" being "before", as in the ante in poker, the bet before the hand starts.

6. According to wikipedia, slave owners were much better at
documenting their pre-war lives than the rest of the country, thus the romanticism of it. I think it's pretty specific to the American Civil war because of the rise of american news papers during that time.

8. Do they give a beginning to the antebellum period?
When I think of it, I think only of the 1800s, though it surely started in the early 1700s, maybe even the 1600s.
