Motown site to become parking
Motown site to become parking

The former headquarters of Motown Records, on Woodward and the Fisher Freeway, soon will be demolished, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said Thursday. For nearly three decades, it was an abandoned, graffiti-scarred symbol of business flight from the city.

The mayor said work will proceed so quickly that the site will be used for parking during the Super Bowl on Feb. 5. After that, the city will market the property to developers.

2. he is still alive but relocated to LA decades ago.
The original Motown studio, a converted house, still stands on Grand Avenue, I believe, with a sign that says "Hitsville, USA"

9. Post #2 tells the story
The building in question has been vacant for at least 20 years, probably closer to 30. It's beyond repair and it is located within walking distance of Comerica Park, Ford Field and the Fox and State theaters. It is a good place for parking long after the Superbowl is over.

The museum is in the original location of Mowtown, and will probably always be there. It's the more appropriate place for a museum because it's where it all started.

6. i don't think this would qualify
tearing down an old building despite it's historic significance to slap up some parking for a one time event ... just doesn't seem to meet the standards of the parking awards

11. Here is a picture of the original Motown studio
A guy I worked with a couple of years ago told about going on a field trip as an elementary student to Motown studios. At the time, they got to see the Temptations making a record, only to see members of the group start arguing with each other in a very profane way, a big shock to the little kids. This guy's aunt used to date Marvin Gaye, as well, about the same time.

Here is one of the original Flamingos at the studio. Terry Johnson
