Poll question: How much should DVD movies cost?
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 11:33 PM by HypnoToad
I've asked before if DVD TV show sets were overpriced, but I never really asked what the 'sweet spot' is. But I'll ask that later. Movies is my target this time.

From a crap movie that failed in the box office (B.O.) to a movie that was exceptional and made lots of money in the B.O., how much should a disc cost?

I'd vote for #2, $15 w/extras.

1. Unless it's an exceptional or foreign/small distributor film,
I won't pay more than $15, and I expect extras at that price.

(multi-disc sets, of course, I'll pay more for, but never list price for anything - but then, amazon always has nice discounts, so no fear on that).

So I go to Circuit City this last weekend to pick up The Two Towers mega-bitchin' version, on sale for $24.99. Of course, they have none on Friday. So I go Saturday - still none. Sunday - still none. So today, Tuesday, I go. Well, blessed hell, they have a full rack of 'em at $29.99.

Bastards.

Now I gotta order from Amazon.

You could also take a look at http://www.dvdpricesearch.com for other e-tailer prices.

Other than DeepDiscountDVD and Columbia House, my preferred online sources for Region 1 (North American) DVDs are http://www.digitaleyes.net , http://www.dvdempire.com , and http://www.dvdplanet.com .

5. Thumbs up for DeepDiscountDVD
They're one of the best DVD retailers around. I can't understand why people pay outrageous prices at Amazon/Borders/Barnes&Noble/etc. when there are several reliable and inexpensive e-tailers out there. For most DVDs, you can find discounts of at least 30% off the MSRP if you shop around.

8. One more thing
DeepDiscountDVD is running the following promotion:

Enter coupon code "usatoday" for 20% off already low prices on 11/27-12/5. No preorders, one coupon per customer.

I haven't tried the coupon yet, but supposedly people are getting the Two Towers extended for under $20 with free shipping.

7. Circuit City online doesn't charge shipping...
Generally avoid backorder problems that way.

Did a DVD project for a client, and even at a quantity of just 1000, the unit cost of duplication/case/inserts/etc. was under $1.50. I'm sure at wholesale, it gets down to 75 or 50 cents for a basic movie. I'd say $12 retail offers PLENTY of room for profit, unless it's some bodacious packaging box-set fiasco.

TV shows shouldn't cost more than a dollar an episode, IMO. They've already made their money, everyone's been paid, those who would buy a box set are probably the viewers who made the show popular in the first place, and deserve to be given a break, rather than to be exploited further.

2. Well, if you know how to "game" Columbia House
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 11:45 PM by Tummler
...you can average $7 per DVD (box sets excluded). You just join (6 DVDs for $17.40 shipped), fulfill (2 more for about $40), quit, and repeat. With a little bit of patience and planning, it's easy!

CH carries 2,500 DVDs and almost all of the big releases ... with the notable exceptions of Disney animated titles and most releases from the Criterion Collection. The only catch is that you have to wait 2-6 months for new releases to become available as enrollment selections.

For my most recent membership, I paid $25 shipped for the Two Towers extended and $20 shipped for X2. (Both already received and watched, by the way.) In addition, I was able to get six other discs for $17.40 total. Pretty sweet.

I'm not affiliated in any way with Columbia House: I'm just a bargain hunter. Though I have 1200+ DVDs, I'm thrifty about 'em! I've done 30+ CH memberships in the last year and a half. If I don't like a movie I got from CH, I can usually sell it at a profit!
