5. Where's rabrrrr?
When I hear martini, I think Gin. If someone wants a vodka martini, they need to specify. Of course, when ordering a martini one usually calls the brand anyway.

Me, Bombay, very dry, stirred, olives.

6. It's so easy, I don't know why people get confused: a Martini has gin,
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 05:40 PM by Rabrrrrrr
and Vermouth, and an olive.

A Vodka Martini has vodka.

A Gibson has gin, Vermouth, and an onion.

It's all perfectly simple, people: remember, vodka keeps its name in the drink: Vodka Martini.

Without the name of a liquor in the name, it's gin.

on edit: I had some of the capitalizations fucked up

Gibson is what I meant.

A Gimlet is the Rose's Lime Juice and gin one.

By the way, Martini is capitalized.

17. You're welcome, my dear Rabrrrrrr......
I don't feel like editing in that capital M, however!

But in the future, you can be sure that I will capitalize the word Martini!

See?

38. So, any suggestions on a good Gin? I've tried some...
that had an aftertaste to it. That's why it's been years since I've drunk any.

39. Try Hendricks - has a very smooth, refreshing, cucumbery aftertaste
(and though that might sounds gross, it actually isn't).

Also really good is Magellan Gin, which is sonically hard to find.

Some I've had before had a "fuel" taste or something. I'd only drink that with juices.

A specialty store (like this one) has a lot more available too. I'm partial to Damrak.

22. Oooh, you know, our demographics studies, before we introduced
this drink, showed us that most drinkers, who are women age 21-27, don't like pulp, so we don't put any in at the factory where we make these pre-made Martinis.

16. No, see, you are wrong. There is no such drink as a Lemondrop Martini.
There is a Lemondrop COCKTAIL, yes.

But no Lemondrop Martini. Because they are both cocktails.

Asking for a Lemondrop Martini is like asking for a Prius Escort; or a Ribeye Sirloin; or granite linoleum.

27. No, they don't exist -
those are cocktails, not Martinis.

Lemondrop COCKTAILS exist - I've made them.

But Lemondrop Martinis DO NOT exist. A drink is either a Lemondrop OR a Martini. Not both.

Like I said, it's like asking for a Prius Escort. Or a Mustang Cadillac. Or a Crossfire Hummer.

35. In other words, calling it a Martini doesn't make it so.
BTW - I agree with you on the vodka thing. I only drink the vodka variety, which is why I don't ask for just a "Martini."

40. But if you put it in a martini glass, isn't it, technically, a martini??
:sarcasm:

I'm kidding, I'm kidding...

I used to tend bar and I don't think I ever made a "martini" with anything but Gin!! Maybe one Vodka martini...but I doubt it.

Made a lot of Tanqueray Gibsons, though!

21. I say...
Drink 'em any way you want.

When I was younger, I drank them with gin and vermouth. That was back in the mid 80s before the new age shit came along. Now anything that seems to have an olive in it is considered a martini..lol.

The purists will only accept gin, but there is no real "law" that dictates how to make a genuine martini.
