I routinely type things like : party:, : bounce: and : toast: on AIM and Facebook messages, and then face the disappointment when they do not appear.

I go ahead and type it out, anyways... but I'd love to see their, well, their smiley faces. :D :loveya:

I also type them out - but I think that this has given rise to a new vernacular, because one can neologise with imaginery smilies. Thus if one wants to give a particular type of hug, rather than merely go for :hug: one can type :bigembracingandcomfortinghug:, and the receiving DUer understands, and can thus imagine a smiley which represents that expanded notion on the original theme.
