What movie makes you cry?
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 08:40 AM by cynatnite
I sob like a baby whenever I watch 'Imitation of Life'.

Annie, the maid, dies without seeing her bratty self-absorbed daughter. The bratty self-absorbed daughter shows up during the funeral procession sobbing over her mother's casket. Yep, a really tear-jerker.

1. This is really odd, but..."Splash."
Daryl Hannah trades away her necklace of gems to buy Tom Hanks the mermaid statue for his bedroom. When he asks her why, she looks at him and says "Because I love you" with such disarming simplicity and vulnerability, I'm instantly teary.

The last movie I distinctly remember crying at was "Kissing Jessica Stein"--when Tovah Feldshuh as the mom wants to tell Jessica she knows about her relationship with a woman. There's a beautiful, beautiful moment where Feldshuh pauses, looks away, summons her courage, and says "Jessie....I think she's a very nice girl." Oh man, waterworks city.

If I see "Brokeback" again, I'll see if I cry--sometimes it doesn't hit till the 2nd time. ("E.T." and "Edward Scissorhands," for example.)

one more movie I can't watch!

Another one I can't watch is Marvin's Room. It's a good movie and very funny but parts of it hit too close to home. And hearing Dianne Keaton's head hit the concrete when she collapses - too much.

5. Pretty much all movies.
I cry REALLY easily. I even got misty at Cheaper by the Dozen, Part 2! heheh.

When I was younger, I used to be ashamed of my tears, but over the years I have come to appreciate my ability to be in touch with my feelings. I guess you could say I wear my heart on my sleeves.

That's me. I'm a sensitive gal.

From the time Annie is in bed until the end of the movie I'm crying. That's about 20 minutes worth of crying I think. It'll pull the tears right out of ya'.

When I told a friend about Mahalia years ago, I didn't know who she was at the time, he knew and gave me a tape of her music. I wore it out.

44. Not quite actual crying
But "Brief Encounter" when she nearly kills herself. Given that the film's about British stiff-upper-lippedness actual crying would be most inappropriate, but it certainly does tug at the heart-strings.

Also the conclusion of "Gone With the Wind", much the same reaction - the tragedy that Scarlet finally realises that what she genuine wants is Rhett, just as he finally rejects her.

63. I'm not making this up...
Back in 3rd grade, for some reason, the teacher showed us "The Land Before Time" (the cartoon dinosaur movie), and for some reason, I ended up crying. I haven't seen the movie since, so I don't remember what the hub-bub was about. I also remember getting a little misty-eyed during "The Adventures of Milo and Otis" (movie about a dog and cat who get lost in the Japanese countryside and narrated by Dudley Moore). Other than that, I haven't cried during a movie in a while.

64. Cinema Paradiso.
I wept uncontrollably on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo after seeing that at the North Park.

The same thing happened to me in D.C. when I went to see Life Is Beautiful.

Romero was also unbelievably intense. I cried all the way through that. Frankly, a good many films make me cry.

Pass the tissues, please.

71. Lonesome Dove:
When Deets dies and Gus reads what Woodrow wrote:
It says, "Josh Deets. Served with me 30 years. Fought In 21 engagements with the Comanche and the Kiowa. Cheerful in all weathers. Never shirked a task. Splendid behavior." That's what it says.

And then when Gus is dying this scene:
(whispers) Augustus.
"By God, Woodrow; it's been one hell of a party."

These 2 scenes have me in tears everytime I see this movie. BTW Lonesome Dove is one of my all time favorite movies, there are many memorable scenes/lines.

Terms of Endearment:
Right before Emma dies she waves goodbye to Aurora,I think this is one of the most touching scenes ever in a movie and no words are spoken at all.

Million Dollar Baby:
The end of this movie was heartwrenching and very well acted imo.

I know there's more but these are the ones that came to mind immediately.

-Matty

I said the same thing down below. Lonesome Dove is a very powerful, authentic movie. Gus, Call, Lorena, Deets, Pea, Jake.... what great characters. I never tire of it.

I was reading it during a meeting and a lady came over and asked me what part I was reading. She said she'd seen me get all misty and saw what I was reading. I thought the movie did honor to the book. You need 6+ hrs to tell that story right.

77. "We Were Soldiers"
gets to me. When Moore is telling the reporter at the end to write his story and tell how his men died, just get the water works going. It was after reading this book, my father finally broke loose and told my mother how he got injured during the war back in 1968. He has shrapnel still in his right lung to this day and had a piece removed 2 years ago from his leg, that worked it's way out of the muscle that caused a goose egg sized mass to grow around it. It was a rocket that exploded 50 yards from where he was in a ditch. He was the radio carrier and had his sargent right next to him. The sargent caught the brunt of it and died instantly. My father however stayed in the ditch for 8 hours, breathing with one lung with the medic beside him until the choppers came. It was friendly fire. He was briefed for 3 days on it to not let out what really happened. Just watching that movie, really lets one know how the war really was there. I know that it has an actor that people do not like, but a movie that depicts how the war was there in the beginning.

The scene where he goes to visit his mother when she's in the cage? I'm tearing up now just typing this.

Here are some sleepers:
"Almost Famous": in the beginning, where the boy's big sister runs off to become a stewardess and she leaves her favorite records for him. As a guy with two great older sisters that scene really got me.

"A League of Their Own": only one scene here. Where Marla, the ugly girl, is trying out without showing her face to Jon Lovitz; when he sees her and says no thanks, she just slumps in the direction of her father as if to say "I'm sorry." That wrecks me when I see it.

"Babette's Feast": not sad, but beautiful. At the end of the meal, the old folks walk outside and dance in a circle while holding hands...there is something so beautiful about that scene.

112. Any number of movies: Life is Beautiful, Platoon, OTT, Steel Magnolias...
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 06:07 AM by blonndee
Life is Beautiful: obviously it's a sad movie but the scene that makes me SOB is toward the end where the dad goes GOOSE STEPPING with the guard, pretending it's a joke with the guard for the sake of his son...

Platoon: I ALWAYS cry during the scene in which Elias is left behind and Chris sees him get shot to death.

One True Thing: JEEEZUS, that whole movie is a cry-fest.

Steel Magnolias: Throughout, but mostly the cemetary scene.

Forrest Gump: All of it, really, but especially when Jenny says "Why are you so good to me?" and Forrest says "You're my girl." I LOVE Forrest. And I love that movie.

Disclaimer: I cry in nearly every movie. I even cry EVERY SINGLE TIME I watch "You've Got Mail"!!! When they meet in the park, I bawl...even though I know it's such a contrived, formulaic ending...I still cry.
