Got my new Metronic Paradigm Insulin Pump working...ask me anything!!!
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 12:16 PM by WeRQ4U
I got the pump to control the wicked-high morning blood sugars (Dawn Phenomenon). I used to wake up on the morning with blood sugar numbers in the 300's. Well, my first night on the system and I woke up this morning with a Blood Sugar number of 80. RAD!!! I've always been fairly religious about my numbers, but I couldn't shake the DP. Now, I'm all set.

In addition to that, it's nice having a machine that does all the math for you during meals and corrections.

3. So that's what was going on.

I thought I was listening to a different DJ's lineup or something. I actually logged on a little early and browsed around the site for a while to see what it was all about. I did listen to it from about 9:15mt to 10:00 while I was reading my pump literature and playing internet poker. Some of it was good stuff.

I actually wrote some songs down on a little sheet of paper next to my chair. Not sure which one's they were off hand, but I'll be looking for them in iTunes later tonight. I hope I wrote the right songs down...I was having trouble figuring out what I was listening to at times.

Thanks for that link. Is that something that you do every day or weekly or what?

5. Jusr curious - why pick the Medtronic pump
when there are all-in-one pumps with the glucose meter built in (like the Deltec Cozmo I use)?
Or does the Paradigm have this feature now? How was your training on it? I got lousy training and had to learn most of the settings myself.
Just curious - and welcome from a fellow pumper!
Remember - Sugar's the bitch - not me!

9. I actually prefer the meter to be detached like mine is.

The medtronic uses IR signal to beam the numbers from the meter to the pump anyway (up to 6 or 7 feet and through clothing). Also, Medtronic is coming out with a constant glucose monitoring system that will replace the meter altogether on their next pump. It will use two cannulas instead of one, and will monitor your sugars every 5 minutes and inject insulin based upon those numbers. No more messing with strips or numbers. I like that. And because I bought a Medtronic pump NOW, I can upgrade to that pump...for a small fee of course... when it comes out.

Also, the Paradigm also has a remote bolus control. It looks like something you'd use to unlock your car doors. You can set the pump to give a certain number of insulin units per depression. For instance, you push the button 4 times, signaling that you want 4 units of insulin. The pump vibrates 4 times signaling that it is going to give you 4 units. You press ACT on the remote, and it gives you 4 units. Nice when you're at dinner or something and you don't want to take the pump out.

As for my training... it was pretty good. The pump itself isn't all that complicated. But even so, the lady from medtronic gave me a 3 hour course on it when I was hooked up and will call me every day for a couple weeks to make sure the basal numbers are tweaked.

Ask yourself, who needs a pancreas when you've got friends?

6. Congrats!!
Love the control you get with a pump... but I've had to go off of it twice now due to pain and hypertrophy :( I hope that you continue to have great morning bgs with it! :bounce: Must feel great!

7. Oh it does.
I've only had the 'betes for 5 years or so, and I'm pretty rigid about my numbers. It feels AWESOME!

8. Did you get a free ipod?
My niece just got her insulin pump (found out she had JD back when she was 6) and along with her pump they gave her a brand new ipod! Not sure what brand they gave her but I was told it's waterproof!

10. I didn't get a free ipod with it.........
But I DID get a free ipod through one of those internet referal ad campaigns. I was as shocked as can be when it showed up.

I didn't get anything free with my pump, except piece of mind.
