Don't get me wrong — it was a damned good paper; we ran out of wall space for ACP awards.

Maybe that was the problem. Maybe we thought we were invulnerable.

Not to budget cuts, we weren't.

27. We were self-supporting
through advertising, and didn't feel vulnerable to budget cuts. Our biggest fear was losing the credibility we'd worked so hard to establish. And we _weren't_ a great paper; but we weren't willing to compromise a bit of credibility, I guess.

30. Part of our 'invulnerability' came from the fact that
we got the money to produce the "joke" issue from some account that wasn't funded by the college. Might've been ad revenue; I forget. So the angry letters that said stuff like "I'm furious that my tax dollars paid for this" were wrong.

But that doesn't really matter when the college president is under attack because he can't "control" his students. :eyes:

33. Well, this guy was getting hammered
A no-confidence vote from the board of trustees, a boatload of collective-bargaining issues, a faculty organization that just freakin' hated him. And we reported on all of it.

When Prop 13 passed and California homeowners got huge property-tax breaks, the writing was on the wall. Education budgets were hacked statewide, and the journalism department got cut 41 percent while other departments got cut 10 percent. Dr. Madsen's revenge.

California never has fully recovered from that.

28. It's nothing I can't post here
The real issue (no pun intended) was the "sex test" that took all of page 4. The editor got pretty stoned, by his own admission, and came up with this "test" that didn't satirize anything, but merely let him wave his own iconoclasm.

The question I remember best was, "Have you ever had sex with a member of either sex while riding backwards on a motocycle down U.S. 101 without getting bugs in your ass?"

Cooler heads should've prevailed. They didn't.

32. Ultimately, I think most of us
I do remember that even while I was going smirk-smirk-smirk, I was thinking, "Man, this is over the top."

The rest of it, for the record, was pretty good snark. The lead story was about the college's impending sale to an Arab concern because oil was found beneath a construction site on campus, and I had a story in sports about a new sport adopted by the Coast Conference, parking-lot demolition derbies, and another one about a golfer losing a leg to a course hazard — a 16-foot alligator.
