I wonder if Shakespeare got his arse kicked on Valentines, for this?
My Mistress eyes
Sonnet 130

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

I don't know; "black wires grow on her head"? It's kind of a poetic version of "but you have a nice personality."

:rofl:

2. At least he didn't tell her she had a nice hat...
I've found that to be a real small talk killer.

3. All the gals like her and she makes her own clothes.
Uh, yeah, the sonnet is hardly a love poem.

4. Yeah. If my husband professed his undying love for me after
stating that I had wiry hair and bad breath, he would be sent hither to the couch with a pillow. A very flat pillow.

6. I like how he rhymed "cheeks" with "reeks"
Anyway, he prolly caught more hell from his fellow poets, for mocking pretty much all the conventions of a love poem all in one sonnet. This is funny!

9. Oh this is definitely a love poem
Just not a very polite one.
The Sonnets are endlessing fascinating - half of them are to his mistress. Obviuosly a black woman. The other half are to his patron - a little homosexuality, Will?

Still and all, he wrote the best thing ever - Never, never, never, never, never. If I had written that, I could die happy.

Khash.
