Poll question: "XXXX For Dummies" and "The Total Idiot's Guide to XXXX" Books
There is an astounding array of these books out there covering everything from cooking to history, travel to health care. What is your opinion of these guides?

1. One can skim through in about half an hour
Then decide whether one wants to read more about the issue/topic concerned. Useful for a very basic general knowledge, or as a gateway to a subject - utterly pointless beyond that though.

2. The computer books really ARE for Dummies and Idiots.
I made the mistake of buying Access 2003 for Dummies and was extremely disappointed to see nothing more than the most basic information (in-depth stuff like "how to save files" and "how to close windows").

6. Why are you blaming the the Dummies books...
When obviously the problem lay in Microsoft products?

9. It's a sign of our celebration of ignorance
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 09:38 AM by Rabrrrrrr
"It's cool to be dumb! And even cooler to know only enough to get by, because thinking and knowing things is scary and means you're a terrorist"

That said, the dummies' (or idiot's) guide to aquariums has been helpful, though not in a deep sense. But still, people are far better off buying a real book on the topic at hand.

12. As someone who used to work for the "...for Dummies" people
I voted They are a symptom of the dumbing down of America. No book should ever be titled "Pregnancy for Dummies". Ever.
