3. Get him checked for diabetes.
Drinking an unusual amount of water, and peeing a lot, can be symptoms. It's controllable, though, if that's what the problem is.

4. Yup, this is what I was thinking.
Although a year old is a little young to be worried.

6. Maybe, but it's no big deal.
I had a cat who was diagnosed as diabetic about 5 years ago (he died recently at the age of 15, of unrelated causes). He had to have insulin shots twice a day, but there's nothing to it. You use a very fine needle and inject in the skin at the scruff of the neck. The cat barely notices the injection (at least, mine didn't). The dose is very small and a vial of insulin lasts for months. Teddy did just fine; he ignored the shots and was pretty healthy the whole time.

Another symptom to watch for is foot drop. If the cat starts walking funny (walking on his entire hind feet instead of his toes), that's a form of neuropathy and can be a sign of diabetes. That's how the vet first figured Teddy had it, and confirmed it with a blood test. After a few weeks on insulin he walked normally again.

The vet can determine why your cat pees so much, but if he does turn out to be diabetic it can be handled.

7. Just as an aside...
A good way to remove pee stains from carpet is to pour baking soda on the stain, covering it thoroughly. Let it sit for at least a few hours or overnight, then vacuum it all up. The soda will soak up the liquid and also help freshen the carpet.
