Using suicidal gestures for emotional blackmail.
Has anyone had to deal with this? When I told my wife I don't want kids, I had to use my training in hand-to-hand combat to disarm her of a knife. In middle of discussing having kids, or the lack thereof, my wife ran to our kitchen crying holding a knife to her wrist. I want a divorce, but I don't know how to do it without having to worry about her doing anything crazy again.

1. I'm confused about something
Did you discuss whether or not to have children before getting married?

But to answer your question...if you want a divorce, get one. You're not responsible for her reaction.

2. Yes we discussed it.
When we married, I told her I was unsure and wouldn't promise anything.

4. As a wife of a man who had a suicidal ex..
Who killed one of her twins while she was pregnant with bleach because he wouldnt take her back, I can tell you this..

If shes suicidal, she needs to see a psychatrist. Seriously. Mental illness is nothing to fluff off like nothing and to me, it sounds to me that shes crying out for help, but I'm not a MD. His ex was 302'd for doing it and spent 14 days in the psychiatric ward.

On the other hand, she knew going into the marriage that you may not want children. That is your choice as well as hers to have or not to have children. You cannot force someone to have kids who dont want them, and it can honestly make things worse.

I hope things work out for you and your wife.

5. Her reaction is so over-the-top
that there is something far greater going on than the child issue.

7. My mom did this to my dad....
And that's the short version of why they got married, as far as I understand it. While I wouldn't take back my own existance, I would suggest that you help her to get some counseling, and if children is a make-or-break deal for her, I would work toward divorce if you really don't want kids. Having children that only one of the couple really wants is a recipe for a really bad ride. Best of luck to you, Allenberg. It does sound like there are some much deeper issues there than wanting children.
