There is a pinkeye epidemic at my school!!!
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 09:25 AM by proud2Blib
We have had a ton of kids get it this week. The nurse told me there is an outbreak all over town. I brought it home to my family. (I'm sorry)

So does anyone here have pinkeye?

15. Used hand sanitizer in my classroom when I was a SpEd teacher
My kids had fewer sick days, and were very compliant about using it and/or washing hands after sneezing, caught picking their noses (something so many kids just do...yuck!), and before using classroom computer and/or having lunch. I was a pain in the school nurse's ass if I even suspected one of my students had been sent to school sick.

re: head lice
was a pain in the rear to school nurse and parents about that. Amazing how many parents will do the head lice shampoo, but won't do the follow up of washing all bedding, clothing, etc.

16. When head lice starts going around the school,
I spray the shit out of my room when the kids aren't in it. I spray their coats and backpacks and the rug they sit on. I even spray the vinyl beanbags. And there has NEVER been a case of headlice in my class since I started doing that. Of course, I am spraying funky chemicals in the room, but at least my attendance is always great. :)

had many students in my Life Skills class (IQ 45-79) that had health and other physical problems. Was afarid I might induce an asthnma attack or compromise someone's physical health.

41. Oh no!!! Please - please - please
Please don't do that. When you spray the clothing the kids are exposed to it constantly and the pesticide goes through their skin and the inhale it. They take it home and can exposre a pregnant woman to them as well as baby siblings. These are dangerous chemicals.

Children do not have the mechanisms to handle those chemicals. Please take a look at these websites to learn more. They are done by a man whose baby died because of exposure to chemicals like this. He has dedicated his life to educating others and getting the information to everyone - for free.

42. I had the joy of dealing with my son's case of head lice
Most exhausting experience ever! Washing, vacuuming, literally nit-picking (now I know where that word comes from) and then repeating the process for 2 weeks. I gave myself and the rest of the family pneumonia because I wore myself out! I hope to never have to do that again! Thank gawd for the internet. headlice.org was a great help in sorting out what to do.

I had a form of it from my allergies a week ago. It's been so warm that my allergies were acting up and my eyes were swollen shut. I used this and it worked quite well.

35. what happened
to your sense of humour? I was just joshing . . . :)

It's not like hs'ers live in a bubble, btw. We spent this particular morning in "beading class" with 7 other kids. And today was our usual "park day" afternoon. We have a core group of about a dozen kids (ages 12-14) plus two new kids today - one with pretty severe Asperger's whose mom was extremely pleased when our kids welcomed him warmly into the group.

They played soccer, talked, and ran around. The soccer game included the younger group of kids, too (about half a dozen 7-9 yos). One of the younger boys is an aspie, one is HF autistic. The autistic younger sister of one of the older girls did just watch on the sidelines with the 4 yo younger bro of another tween.

Wed & Fri's my sons go to gymnastics. T & Th they take kung fu. My hs'ed son helps teach the younger kids, and assists with the older kids (his group). On Wednesday he does a two hour volunteer session with the local library. On Saturdays, we all take Chinese classes. Two wkends a month he volunteers with the local pet adoption group. Oh and he's starting a writing class the end of this month. In his free time, he goes skateboarding at the local skate parks.

We're getting ready to start a middleschool co-op for history and science - centered around the Teaching Company series. There will be about 16 kids in that. Oh yeah, they also meet 1x a month for a cooking class (by a gourmet chef) and 1x a month is just "party night".

So don't worry, he gets plenty of exposure to all those germs. And if all else fails, don't forget, my younger son goes to PS so I'm sure he'll bring something home eventually. :)

29. No, but my kid got it back when he was 2 yrs old. It sucked.
I had to give him those eye drops and he absolutely HATED them. I remember having to chase him all over the house and forcibly hold him down, so I could pry his little crusty eyes open and administer the drops. It was totally traumatic for BOTH of us. I felt like a terrible mother and he screamed bloody murder every time I brought out the drops out. Bad memories....ugh.

and then one time I got it in just one of my eyes and that was a total bummer, too.

Bottom line, you have my sympathy. Good luck.

32. Yeah, the teachers at my kid's elementary school refer to their
classrooms in the fall as little petri dishes of bacteria. It's really bad in Sept, when they all come back together again.

Well, the good news is, every time we get sick we're building our immunity. I like to keep a positive spin on things. :)
