I really, really enjoyed my time in Gainesville. The university is cool, lots of artist people in town, good live music scene. I _love_ the sound of dew dripping off of the palmetto trees (I _think_ they were palmettos), beautiful area when it rains. :shrug:

I'm always trying to weasel Phoenix into my schedule - we do market research for pharma companies, and they usually limit Phoenix to "old people diseases" plus fungal infections (which is how I learned More Than I Ever Wanted to Know About Valley Fever). A few times I've been lucky enough to get Phoenix scheduled for early February so I could swing down to Tucson for the Gem Show.

Baseball sounds good to me, or lunch somewhere!

I _like_ Des Moines. It's not as cool, in my opinion, as Ames, but I like almost every town in the midwest. :thumbsup:

They do a nice job in that department. And Des Moines restaurants serve a nice big breakfast for travelers. I've enjoyed their breakfasts every time I travel through there to MN and then to WI.

I like living in this area. There are good people around here who will help anyone, whether they ask for the help or not. They've just been fed a line of bull the past few years.

Midwesterners are honest, hard working people who would auction off a kidney for a total stranger if s/he needed the $$. We get a bad rap for being in "flyover country", but we do know what's going on, once we get to the truth of the matter.

Where else would you find an entire town holding car washes, services-rendered sales and pancake breakfasts for someone who needed the money for almost any reason? I never heard about this when I lived in cities but it's an everyday occurence in a small town in the Midwest.

I just didn't want them to feel left out! I'm in northeastern Illinois so i can't slam on the midwesterners either.

I had a friend who lived there briefly after college-- his then-wife got a good job there. I visited once, and it struck me as being very oppressive, right-wing and not very friendly.

that's just my $.02 though-- after all, I don't mind Phoenix.

streets - just numbers and letters

the letter/number streets are mostly downtown. Which actually makes navigating the city extremely easy.

It is boring, but come on, you can come up with a better reason to call it that besides the names of the streets, can't you?

over a Christmas w/ people I didn't really know or like & there was no escape!!!! Nowhere to go, nothing to do--all shut down. I actually had an attack of what can only be called acute claustrophobia--something I'd never had before or since. Whew Im getting a little sweaty and heart pounding just thinking about it. I'm sure that experience colored my perception of Lincoln Nebraska somewhat. Most cities of any size have a diverse enough population that SOMETHING will be open on Christmas day, but not Lincoln. (this was about 20 yrs ago though so maybe it's changed.)

I remember when I was a kid everything would be closed down on Christmas day. Most things still are, as they are everywhere else, but not EVERYTHING. The population is a lot more diverse than it was 20 years ago. Mostly thanks to its designation as a refugee city. Lots of people from Vietnam, Bosnia, and various African countries.

Sounds like your experience was negative more because of the people you were with than by the city itself though. I lived there for 7 years (and within an hour of it my entire life until about 4 months ago) and I admit it's relatively boring. But I certainly wouldn't put it at the top a list of most horrible places.

a city (New Orleans) where streets are named after Greek mythology--i.e. Dryades, Euterpe, Prytania (nymphs), Elysian Fields, Terpsichore (Greek muse of music and art). There's the Indian names too like Tchoupitoulas. Certain people are attracted to certain places bc of the whole vibe... as reflected in historical place names.

Most Midwestern cities were built on a grid with the letter/number system. And yet, not all Midwestern cities are unoriginal and/or boring.

Heck, it's not only the Midwest. Look at New York City. 57th street and 4th avenue? Yawn. And yet...not a boring city.

Or Atlanta, where every street has the word "peach" or "piedmont" in it. Wholly unoriginal, but the city itself has some spunk.

Your argument may have merit in that cities with original street names tend to be interested. However, that does not lead to the logical conclusion that those without original street names are therefore boring.

Oh come on, Im just ragging -- as we were invited to do so by the O.P.! I didn't conclude that cities were boring BECAUSE of their boring street names, I concluded that boring street names can be but one facet of a city's boring-ness. A subtle difference there... No, the street names are definitely not the whole story but I still think people are attracted to places (or not) depending on the "vibe" and history (as reflected in place names. architecture, local traditions, etc.)

Actually now that I think about it-- probably the most boring names and places of all are those newer suburban developments with the fake names and fake identities. Like "Ridge Valley" -- what the hell is THAT? How can a place be both a "ridge" (top of hill) and a valley both. And then you look around and see neither a "ridge" nor a "valley!" No sense of place, no nothing. Now THATS boring.

And the people have so little creativity and are so obsessed with their mediocre college team that almost every business is named after the the Cornhuskers. Cornhusker Bank! Big Red Lighting! Herbie Husker Furniture! It is truly sad.

There's stinky gross towns, sickly sweet towns, some with really peculiar chemical odors. A friend of mine who grew up in New Jersey said people often referred to places by their smells, like "that town three stinks west of here."

Believe it or not, South Asian professionals with $$$ have slowly been filtering in to New Canaan. The same cannot be said of adjacent "Aryan Darien".

one time, i was training a girl for my job, which required driving a route to pick up water samples for testing. Anyway, we were in zanesville, and stopped for gas out near the edge of town. She had to go to the bathroom, so she went inside. She came out ten seconds later...

When she walked in, there were 8 or so guys talking, but they stopped, dead silent, and stared at her as she walked toward the bathroom (she was pretty attractive). needless to say, she got the fuck out of there. Not to say that's what all of zanesville is like, but you know...

because it's a grimy little town and I feel a great swell of pity for anyone who has to live there.

I live in the most Republican-voting county in the country. :(

Great thrift store shopping there, though, largely due to the movement of Air Force personnel and their families through the town.

It is mostly a gigantic strip mall. One of the most unattractive cities I've ever seen. And the airport, DFW... Eeew.

Tacoma, WA - Awful smell from a nearby paper mill.
Stockton CA - Horrible.
El Paso TX - doesn't help that Juarez is 1 mile away.
Jackson Mississippi - home to my relatives. last time I was there (1986) still horrificly racist.
Larimie WY - Small, drab, cold, and lifeless
