the belief that it could ward off the plague. There's nothing definitive about it....just suppositions.

Here's snopes take on it:

http://www.snopes.com/language/literary/rosie.htm

<snip>
The explanations of the rhyme's "true" meaning are inconsistent, and they seem to be contrived to match whichever version of "Ring Around the Rosie" the teller is familar with. For example, the purpose of the "pocket full of posies" is said to by any one of the following:

Something carried to ward off the disease.
A way of masking the "stench of death."
An item the dead were commonly buried with.
Flowers to place "on a grave or funeral pyre."
A representation of the "pus or infection under the skin in the sores" of plague victims.

32. Little baby mammals in litters - the girls .. if they are beside or in
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 06:17 PM by applegrove
between brothers.. they get some testorsterone than their sisters not beside the brothers. So the little baby mammal girls born right beside a brother or in between two are more aggressive and "boy" as children than their sisters born not beside a boy.

It works for human twins. It works for possums (who are born premature and then line up in a few rows to attack to mom for a few months).

Baby girls are affected by testosterone in their environment. Till they hit secondary sexual characteristics when their brains go more girl.

41. No, no, no. - you have to be in a litter or in utero with the brothers.
Being in between them in age means no more testosterone than normal. But yeah - as a middle child she will learn how to roughouse and depending on the competative spirit may be better than her brothers.

But no - I'm talking twin humans or litters of possums.

Not learned.

Go sister.

Common Folklore regarding mice:

If a mouse gnawed at your clothes or you dreamed about a mouse it meant you were going to die soon.
Ancient Jewish Folklore forbade the eating of any food a mouse had chewed on because it could cause forgetfulness or a sore throat.
There are some who believed that the devil came on board Noah's Ark in the form of a mouse and gnawed a hole in it to make it sink.

45. Snails can live over 60 years
I learned this from a Smithsonian expert on gastropods. I'd found a couple of snails in my garden, and decided to keep them in a terrarium for awhile. So I called the Smithsonian to find out what sort of food/environment I should provide.

She told me a story about a collection of snails they had been given in the 1920s which had been found in Italy, identified, and carefully glued onto cardboard. In the 1990's, someone was re-cataloguing things and came upon the collection, which had been kept in a climate-controlled environment of course, to discourage mold.

After all that time, 2 snails were still alive, and had survived on cardboard and glue.
