Wow, it was 35 years ago that he was on top of the charts.

2. The Tribute?
How did you feel about the tribute itself? Do you think they picked the right people to perform the tribute? In general I thought they got the wrong people to perform the tribute. I was also upset to see the Joss Stone was a part of the tribute mainly because of her performance last year in the Janis Joplin tribute.

11. Steven Tyler?
not the first name that comes to mind for an r&b/funk/soul tribute.

14. I agree. Prince would have been a good one to include. You really
can't expect too much from those grammy wonks. On second thought, Prince would avoid that circus at all costs. It is amazing Sly is standing with all the drug problems I've heard about.

6. I thought it was disgraceful
Edited on Thu Feb-09-06 09:56 AM by Strawman
Leave this poor guy alone. He looks like he can barely walk let alone perform. His life has been ruined by an addiction. I'm sure he's had plenty of enablers along the way who were happy to give him drugs as long as the hits kept coming and they could make a buck off of him one way or another. Now somebody thinks they can get some buzz to sell copies of a tribute album by trotting him out there like that. It made me sad and angry. That industry really uses people up. It was appropriate that Dave Chappele introduced him. He bolted his show when he saw himself in the very early stages of being in similar jeopardy.

I sure didn't get the vibe that he was at all happy up there. If I did, it would have been fine.

Any Floyd fans who think that it would be amazing if Syd Barrett ever came back, just watch Sly Stone on the Grammys and you'll quickly realize that it wouldn't be cool at all.

7. Perhaps Sly should've stuck to 'gardening' like ol Syd
Barrett!

15. Actually "Roger Barrett" is now a painter
and sells a lot of his work. There was a story on him and his current life in the British press a couple years ago. Google him and see for yourself.

9. Yeah, poor Sly was just forced to take all those drugs
It's a tragedy what happened to him, but he did it to himself.

I'm sure that someone was holding Sly captive as well when he wouldn't appear at concerts during the 70's.

10. You're right

Ultimately he did it to himself and put himself in this position. But I still think it's disgusting when people just don't care and use vulnerable people like addicts. That's what I saw on that stage, a used up entertainer being wrung to the last drop by people who thought they could make one more buck off of it. I'm not absolving Sly for his personal failures or shortcomings, merely criticizing those who try to cash in with no regard for someone's human frailty or weakness.

If you take advantage of someone who is a drug addict and then say "hey it's his fault, if he wasn't a drug addict, I wouldn't have been able to take advantage of him," you're still wrong. If he was an asshole to his fans, bandmates, family, friends, etc., he's accountable for that, but the people doing this are also accountable for their behavior as well.

13. And those damn cancer patients. How dare they get cancer like that
we should just kick them to the curb and let them figure it out, because they're obviosly immoral.

Addiction is a disease, just like cancer. Many addicts literally cannot stop themselves from abusing drugs/alcohol/whatever. It's not an issue of 'moral failing', it's a matter of whether or not somebody's brain is wired toward addiction.

The medical and mental health communities realized this long ago. It's unfortunate that many supposedly enlightened Americans have yet to do so.
