What's a "Metrosexual"?
I was watching one of the music channels over the weekend, and they kept using that term.

5. Dean may be a lot of things,
but a Metrosexual isn't one of them. No self respecting Metrosexual would be caught dead in one of Dean's suits.

14. I love Dean. I work my butt of for Dean. I send Dean money
every two weeks. But the man wears 10 year old $150 suits from JC Penney. He is not a Metrosexual by any stretch.

I guess when that term died they just decided to make up another one to bury next to it.

3. A man
who likes to be well-groomed, goes to salons, stuff like that.

It's basically a code word for calling a guy a homosexual without just coming out and saying it.

8. That's about right.
My definition is a straight man who's gay, except he's not attracted to men. I may be wrong.

I think you've got it, actually.

36. As I've heard it defined
it's a man who is unambiguously straight, but who has taken many lessons from gays about grooming, interior design, wine & diningetc.

A metrosexual could be a straight 6th member of the Fab Five from Queer Eye.

23. a straight man who has gay tastes but is not attracted to men
gets manicures, pedicures, takes extreme care with dressing,
would have eyebrows done, etc.

But they aren't attracted to men.

David Beckham was the first one I ever heard about. They tend
to be pretty pretty. :)

16. metro = city
Therefore a metrosexual is someone who has sex with an entire city. Either that, or we need to have more latin instruction in our schools.

13. Narcissism (sp?)
The first time I heard this term in New York City it was used to describe men who might have sex with other men but do not consider themselves homosexual. Sort of a "love the one you're with" vibe.

I was frankly shocked to hear it used in reference to Doc. The man is not only not gay, but he dresses terribly.

I do not think anything good can come of being labeled metrosexual.

27. Couple of Links

That's the term for a new generation of hip, urban men who can shotgun their beers and tell the difference between Levi's and Diesel. You can see them in your beauty salon getting their facials and pedicures. They compliment you on your shoes because they actually like your shoes. They're like my brother who says stuff like, "No carbs after 8 PM," and lets me know that tennis skirts are the latest summer rage in New York. These are straight men who appreciate the value of looking good and don't need an army of gay men to help them do it.

http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=16847

So what makes a metrosexual man? He's been defined as a straight, sensitive, well-educated, urban dweller who is in touch with his feminine side. He may have a standing appointment for a weekly manicure, and he probably has his hair cared for by a stylist rather than a barber. He loves to shop, he may wear jewelry, and his bathroom counter is most likely filled with male-targeted grooming products, including moisturizers (and perhaps even a little makeup). He may work on his physique at a fitness club (not a gym) and his appearance probably gets him lots of attention -- and he's delighted by every stare.

28. I agree with these definitions, but.....
....I do get a little annoyed with the stereotype that all gay men are perfectly groomed, wear only couture, and have bodies that could don the covers of Men's Health, etc.... Unfortunately, this is mostly what you see with such high-profile shows as Will & Grace, Queer Eye, etc...

There are lots of us who don't fit that stereotype, and if you look at my screen name, you'll see that there is an entire group of gay men who identify themselves as "bears"--i.e., usually large, bearded (well, hairy in general!) men who are, on the whole, very laid back, friendly, prone to spontaneous huge hugs, etc...

Okay, okay...I'm probably too over-sensitive about this, but I think it's important to point out that there are many types of homosexuals (and heterosexuals) out there.

Okay, off the soapbox...

:)

29. i think i'm borderline
My M.S. qualities: i'm straight, i live in the trendy and cultural (gay) area of my city, i dress well, i own lots of "products" for my hair and skin, i enjoy art and theater, i like good food and drink. my apartment is clean and extremely well-furnished (for the meager paycheck i take home every other week). I read a lot (not science-fiction). I don't know how to do anything with tools.

Non M.S. qualities: i've never gone to salons for haircuts, manicures, pedicures, etc., in fact i bite my nails down to a repulsive length. i am addicted to sports. actually i drink too much beer, chew my nails, and scratch my hairy body each night while watching sports. I'm an ex-high school sports star.. meaning i could stand to lose 15 pounds. I have a really good looking girlfriend.

30. Folks! Metrosexual is just the tagword for
the mainstreaming of the gay culture aesthetic. Frankly, Americans could all use a little boost in the personal style department.

I'm all for it!

Where I live we do have many Lesbians, but many apparently heterosexual women certainly dress and effect their mannerisms. I am, BTW, not being negative in any way. Just wondering.
