1. The genesis of this comment is a showing of "War of the Worlds"
on ThrillerMAX. The original 1953 version with Gene Barry, not the crummy version with the guy who jumps on couches :puke:.

Anyway, when they throw a nuke at the alien ships in the last hope of repelling the invasion, I thought of some of the history of the making of A-bombs and H-bombs, and remembered some comments from scientists assigned to the Manhattan Project to the effect that they had no idea whether the test bomb would start a chain reaction that would destroy the planet. But they tested it anyway.

No wonder Oppenheimer flipped out.

I'm just saying. As a species, we're fucking NUTS.

9. The scientists at Los Alamos had a pool
with possible results of Trinity. One — it might've been Teller — predicted a chance that the atmosphere would catch fire.

I believe it's part of the nature of scientists to be willing to risk anything to see the results of their work. I must say I rather admire that.

But... Oppenheimer "flipped out"? I know he divorced himself from further nuclear projects and campaigned against the hydrogen bomb, but did I miss something?

5. "It is in your nature to destroy yourselves"
This quote, from the Terminator to young John Connor in T2 Judgement Day, was all too true. It is in our nature to destroy ourselves, and has been from the beginning of time. As time progresses, we just come up with more sophisticated ways to do it. :-(

6. We'll Make Great Pets....
...

Children are innocent
A teenager's fucked up in the head
Adults are even more fucked up
And elderlies are like children

Will there be another race
To come along and take over for us?
Maybe martians could do
Better than we've done
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!

My friend says we're like the dinosaurs
Only we are doing ourselves in
Much faster than they
Ever did
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!

We will make great pets
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We will make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!
We'll make great pets!

7. It's true, and it has to be this way.
Otherwise, we'd have no reason to evolve.

8. 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' comes to mind
snip:
There must be security for all -- or no one is secure... This does not mean giving up any freedom except the freedom to act irresponsibly.

snip:
I came here to give you the facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet -- but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder.

10. A voice from the past
“When the doctrine of allegiance to party can utterly up-end a man's moral constitution and make a temporary fool of him besides, what excuse are you going to offer for preaching it, teaching it, extending it, perpetuating it? Shall you say, the best good of the country demands allegiance to party? Shall you also say it demands that a man kick his truth and his conscience into the gutter, and become a mouthing lunatic, besides?”

Mark Twain
