This RW FREAK Emailed Me AND Left His HOME PHONE NUMBER!!
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 09:44 PM by matcom
the email to me (have NO idea where THIS came from):

On this 50th anniversary of Playboy Magazine, perhaps a discussion of pornography is appropriate. Pornography is defined as
sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal. Those who promote it believe they are exercising their right from the first amendment of the United States Constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The delicate question before us goes beyond the legal justification for allowing anyone to speak or write about anything they choose to. It speaks to the moral and ethical ramifications of such an enterprise. Our society today is inundated with references to sexuality in any medium we experience. The often quoted justification is that "sex sells" and therefore if marketing outlets can somehow equate a material purchase with sexual gratification, then some hidden unmet need will be satisfied. This is Freudianomics and Liberalism at its worst. Sex is promoted today as a means to an end and not the expression of love between consenting adults. Pornography portrays sex as some lustful hedonism with little regard for the potential outcome of such an experience. Still, millions of people purchase it for their own sexual stimulation. They believe that since those being filmed are consenting adults there is no harm to anyone. Assuming there is mutual consent among the actors, what is the difference between paying them to have sex with each other and paying a prostitute to have sex with you? Whether you favor or oppose pornography, it is this country's obsession with sex that is the root of the problem and the unfortunate consequences it produces. Until we as a nation can collectively mature out of this sexual pre-occupation we will be trapped in our own national adolescence.

Is it cool to call someone at home?

99% of the time I'd say f*ck 'em and feed 'em beans; but a 'home harragueing' is more them than us- isn't it?

4. OMG - that happened to a friend of mine back in the '80s
My friend Mark had his car plastered with good liberal bumper stickers and one day he had a note under his windshield wiper. I still remember it fondly to this day. He brought it into our college paper. It said,

"Sure, you pagan fool, save the whales and kill the human babies! Why don't you call me and I can tell you all about (my church - which shall remain anonymous here...) and I will set you straight." There was other stuff as well. Then he seriously left his name, address and phone number.

Truly, the mind reels. This is too funny!

8. IMO, since the email is spam, it's therefore public,
and the name, address, and number should be allowed to stay. Sending spam is the same as putting all the info ob a billboard or skywriting it.

But that's just IMO.

7. Well, he has one thing that's correct:
from the end:

it is this country's obsession with sex that is the root of the problem and the unfortunate consequences it produces. Until we as a nation can collectively mature out of this sexual pre-occupation we will be trapped in our own national adolescence.

But he misses the more important truth: it's the righties who are the one's who are obsessed about sex and won't shut up about it. There is no problem with sex (though I will admit that I wish they'd stop sexing up 8 year olds and trying to make them look like adults), but otherwise, there is no problem. Except that those idiots make it a problem by NOT SHUTTING UP ABOUT IT.

meanwhile, people are starving to death, and they fail to see also taht many in the sex industry are drug addicts, or poor, or otherwise sort of forced into the sex industry BECAUSE OF THE POLICIES OF THE RIGHT that make jobs disappear, government help disappear, and who actively work to disenfranchise as many people as possible.

If these people would spend their time and energy working for social justice and social equality, there might be a lot less sexual exploitation.

12. "Sex sells" is 'justification?'
"The often quoted justification is that "sex sells" and therefore if marketing outlets can somehow equate a material purchase with sexual gratification, then some hidden unmet need will be satisfied."

Ummm.... bullshit, my little reich-wing darling. You have a weird take on Mad Ave, Mr. Bialek.

No buddy, it's YOUR obsession with sex that's the root of YOUR problem. These wingnuts project their problems onto the whole world, don't they? They assume everyone is as crazed as they are.

16. It's clear that this country has an obsession with...
SEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEX. Why is the real question. It's an obsession because we are immature as a culture. Europeans view sex for what it is: a natural act that everyone does and goes on with the important aspects of their lives. Here we are so infatuated by the sheer naughtiness of it that it becomes too important. And that's the RW fault. I agree with another poster: they're the ones who make a big thing (no pun intended, though p8*n*s-envy can't be discounted) Our puritan ethic, while having much good to say for it (work ethic, et al.) is absolutely bonkers on sex. This magnifies the importance of it. Also, and here I'll probably get flamed but, many men (myself included) are loath to grow up. Evidence: the real depression experienced by many when they turn a decade. 30 is the worst for some, but 40 is terrifying for many heteros.
Is porno degrading? Yes, I think so. But sometimes it's hilarious, and often it's boring. It's here to stay.

The guy's an idiot fo posting it. The only two things about myself that I'll ever post online is what city I live in, and my birthday, only if it's the day in question.
