Who here has a choice of cable television companies?
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 09:11 PM by Phoebe Loosinhouse
I don't. The ONLY choice in my area is Cox Cable. Great free market. And yes, Direct TV is here too, but I am only discussing cable choices. Why is it that I can only slect ONE company if I want cable TV?

1. We have Comcast and Wide Open West.
Tried Wide Open West and their service is even worse than Comcast. We have Directv, but use cable for internet, because there is too much rain fade here and I am running a business that requires emailing reports on time. :hi:

7. Nope. No choice here.
We do not use cable for television (we have DirecTV), but we do use cable for internet. It's pretty much our only high-speed option at the moment, so we suck it up and use Cable One.

8. Dish Network is a good alternative to Directv
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 09:26 PM by pimpbot
Unless you require directv for the NFL season ticket plan, dish has pretty much all the other channels and usually costs less. Plus, less money for directv is less money for news corp.

10. I like DirecTV - we've had it since 1998 and I have no complaints.
Cable One is another story, but they're the only cable game in town.

(And we do get NFL Ticket - it's the only way to get all the Vikings games out west here.)

32. i switched from Dish to DirecTV-
the signal/picture is better with directv, but their remote & dvr technology is sadly second-rate at this point.

31. I don't like Dish. I don't like the interface, and the programming sucks.
A waste of money. When my contract is up, I'm switching to the only other choice in my area.

And they got into a bandwidth pissing match over the last year. I have RCN and my cable modem speed went from 3Mbps to 10Mbps in the last 2 years.Very nice.

19. While we're at it - let's talk grocery stores
I live in San Antonio and we've got ONE - ONE grocery food chain, HEB. Well, I guess I could go to Wal-Mart (NOT). How's that for choice?? I absolutely hate to go food shopping because I HAVE to go to HEB. Whenever I think about it I just get incredibly angry. They've managed to drive Kroger and Albertson's out of town.

Oh - there is Costco. But it's not close and it's not practical for small items.

21. Incest or The Bird.
I think we still have Incest (Insight) cable here. I dunno, I don't have it. Might be Commie-Cast, cable companies change owners faster than rock groupies change bedpartners around here.

You folks with 2 or more companies, do you actually have multiple cable runs up and down your streets, or is it a deal like Indianapolis did with electricity, in that the main utility "sells" service to another company at "wholesale prices" and they turn around and sell it to YOU for less than the parent company would?

They're trying to ram through telecom "Reform" here in Indiana, which the proponents claim would lower prices and open up competition, but it also removes price controls....

Bet I know where the average $45 a month cable bill and $44 a month landline bill will be going with that...

the local one keeps Charter from upping their monopoly prices and has the best local service.

29. cox, directv, dishtv, and verizon very soon
Verizon just got a franchise to provide wireline video service in competition to Cox and there's always DirecTV or Dish --

I'm curious -- why limit the discussion to 'cable' companies when DirecTV and Dish TV are competing alternatives?

if you haven't looked into it lately, do so- the pricing is comparable or BETTER than cable-tv pricing.
