Do you ever get homesick?
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 01:21 AM by liberal_veteran
I moved far, far, far away from my family in Georgia and to be honest, given the hard right turn it has made in the last few years I don't regret my decision not to go back to the place I grew up.

But every now and again, I miss the area. I miss the rivers, the forests, the swamps, the heat and the thunderstorms. I miss the wildlife and I miss the plant life of which my grandmother taught me so much about. I miss the long growing seasons and the smell of gardenias and magnolias that used to perfume the air on a muggy summer night.

I haven't lived in Georgia for 20 years and I still can call up all those memories and smells and sensations in my mind and miss the hell out of it.

6. I'm also from upstate ....
Your old hometown is really hitting the skids. It's hard to tell it apart from Troy these days.

Now that's depressing.

7. It was all over when they 'dozed Mohawk Mall
:(

I do feel bad, because upstate New York is actually quite beautiful. Rich in history, too. But Schenectady has always been a one-shop town: if the GE plant was doing good, everybody was doing good; if GE was doing bad, everyone was doing bad. Now most of the GE plant is a pile of bricks. My grandfather isn't alive to see it, which is good, because it would break his heart. He was an engineer there for a long time, and put a lot of pride into what he did.

2. Actually
I have been thinking about my home island more often.

Yes, I miss all the wonderful things about it, including my family.

Have you ever thought about going back there and visiting your family?

8. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot....
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot,
With a pink hotel, a boutique,
And a swinging hot spot.
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone?
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

9. Upon reflection, I am homesick after all
Limbought made me realize it. I'm not homesick for the Schenectady of 2003. I'm homesick for the place it once was. :(

10. well I'm here now but when I live away yes
AS much as a young HEyHEY wanted to leave home so much. Usually about one or two months in I'd get homesick...funny I always missed my older sister the most. We fought alot during the teen years.

The last time I moved away from home I got to my new place...got through the day alright, then on the first night alone I was looking at a few pics and burst into tears.

11. yes, I get homesick for America
Every day it gets worse.
I miss the friendly banter on the streets of NYC. The days when cops did not look at everyone as evil.
The days when you could walk around anywhere with a backpack. And a pocket knife.
Not having to go through metal detectors to see friends who work in High Schools.
Being able to stick it to airlines for frequent flier miles someone gave me.
Not having a FUCKING camera watch my every move every where.

I don't want much. Just people to come back to their senses.

12. Georgia? Really...
I lived in Valdosta for many years. I have relatives in Valdosta, Warner Robins, Vidalia, Augusta, Clyattville, Lake Park, Lilburn, Stone Mountain, Macon, and Thomasville.

I used to fish and swim at Clark Hill reservoir during several summer vacations.

You're right about how conservative and hateful the state has become. I have relatives who are still foaming that the confederate battle flag was removed from the state flag.

I moved to Florida from Maryland 8 years ago and I feel like a fish out of water. Two vastly different places.

Edit: Unless I'm out West or in Canada.

15. Wow! Me too.
Grew up in Pa., have lived in Maryland since '86, but the place I love best is out West - from Colorado to Northern B.C.

14. You Can't Go Home Again.
See Thomas Wolfe.

Actually you can, but save it for your old age. Meantime, look to the future, not the past.

16. What part of GA I am from there as well
I am from Swainsboro GA. I lived in Atlanta for 6 years, loved that town.

Here is a poem just for you, man.

Somewhere in GA

I was between Savannah and Augusta
Passing over the 'Hoopee
Near the 'Geechee
After a hard rain
With the steam
Coming off the blacktop
All that heat
Like the hottest hell
Catching myself wonderin'
If the rivers ever met
Out there in the branch
Out there with only
The gators to see
And I'm thinking this
As the pine trees
Whip by at whiplash speed
Stuck in by the mix
Of sand and red clay
Turned orange together
That's when I see
The cotton on a comeback
Dropped low by the rain
And the blood of farmers
In the backwoods
Brought low by
The wrath of tiny bugs
It reminds me of
A million things like
Cornbread, and turnips
And sipping Jack
As the barbeque cooks
And the friendliness
Mixed with intollerance
And a run-down barn
In an empty field rotting
As the cotton drips
Rain and blood.

18. No matter where I am...
I'm homesick for some other "home". I grew up in Maine and am often nostalgic for it. I lived in the Keys for years, and lately am feeling homesick for that place. If I go back down there,I know I'll be homesick for Boston.
I thought I would know,by this time in my life, where I really needed to be to feel "at home". Maybe I'm just a gypsy at heart.
