A Moral Question (i.e. Job Opportunity)
In this morning's paper, there was a classified ad for a job opportunity for someone with my background. Having been unemployed for nearly two months, I am ready to look at almost anything. However, upon further investigation, I found out that William "Slots" Bennett is on the Board of Directors of this particular outfit. Given all the Harvard MBAs and other Ivy League credentials of the other board members, should I conclude that this is a repug company, as they advocate home schooling.

Their website is http://www.k12.com

Comments would be greatly appreciated.

1. This on their site says it all for me
http://www.k12.com/using/

"Children should be introduced to humankind's legacies. "

I'm wondering if such legacies include America's history of wrongdoings given equal time with its so-called successes, if the National Debt and our vital dependence on a depleting resource will be mentioned as well. Those are legacies our children would murder us for if they figured it out, but we should be grateful that children are so-called "innocents"...

If you do work for these creatures, do it for the money and move to a better job the moment you get an opportunity. It's hard to live in a country that doesn't allow people to live by the ethics they want; we're forced to earn money and live by somebody else's warped sense of ideology while being under constant risk of being outsourced or made redundant... (I have this thing about corporations throwing people aside instead of being loyal to them and allowing them to grow within the organization as well...)

14. I agree with your outlook
Fortunately, I have a decent job, but as I have seen in the past, it could all go to shit. And Thermodynamics are at the center of what I do (hence the name "boilerbabe") Anyway, I see no reason for home-schooling. i would have totally hated my parents had they done that to me (it's bad enough that they named me Jo-lee). Even though my parents had the right background to pull that off, I am SO glad I was in the public school sytem. Don't these people realize that a child needs to interact with others?? I think home-schooling belongs only to the Little House on the Prairie.

2. don't make assumptions
why not apply for the job? maybe bennett is just a figurehead. maybe the co is doing something worthwhile anyway. maybe the job will give you opportunities to do good, that will outweigh whatever questionable corporate motives the co has.

or, maybe they won't be interested in hiring you anyway.

imho, apply for the job, and if you are interviewed, you can get the facts. if they're not to your liking, then you can make an informed decision about whether to continue pursuing a job with them.

why assume the worst?

3. We as Democrats need to infiltrate corporations . . .
we need to be in charge in corporate America. When we're in charge, we can do a better job. As an unemployed person you have no power in this materialistic country. If you want to make a difference go to work for a firm make as much money as you can and use that money to make a better world.

4. I have a little bit of info . . .
They target charter, private, and home schools in particular. That alone would bother me, but it's your decision. They recently got approval here in Arizona to offer a "Virtual Academy" to rural kids, funded by vouchers.

The curriculuum is very "basics," read, no critical thinking encouraged.

5. It's a job
if you need the income, take it, and do it half-assed while looking for another job.

6. what could be better....
you can meet bennett a certain events! i`d check it out if you`re in this field..ya never know you might learn to set up this for kids of all us "traitors"... i`m all for public education but it really sucks in some areas. there`s nothing wrong with home schooling as long as it isn`t used to hide kids from the "evil" world.

7. "Changed minds are needed everywhere"
"I've said that changed minds are needed EVERYWHERE, and this is a prime example. <...> So subvert it to the extent that you can by dispelling the myths that are driving us to the brink of extinction. When I was in educational publishing, I did what I could to subvert the Taker mythology that is embedded in the materials published for children. I couldn't do much, but that's not the point. We must each do what we can WHEREVER WE ARE, and with millions of us doing that, it will add up to very significantly."

Now beyond any high-minded notions, I'd say you need to decide if you can actually do an effective job there. Many people are simply incapable of risking a compromise of their values by contributing to a company that they feel is of low value. (i'm one) ;)

8. You will find people like Bennett on corporate boards of all size companie
That is the sad state of affairs in America, however directors have little or no impact on operational matters. They are usually selected for name recognition and may only receive token payment.

If you think you will be bothered by the work you will do, then you will be bothered. If you think you won't be bothered, you won't be bothered.

If you approach the job as a learning experience and just one more step in your life's journey, then you will have a wonderful time while you look for the next job.

Even though you don't like the job or people, I encourage you to do you best. Working at half capacity is a bad experience, better if you don't take the job.

10. Infiltrate, man! Infiltrate!
So you need the money, but if they are the Repubs they appear to be, you will certainly suffer for it.

Not to mention that you will learn the inside scoop and would be able to change the system or at least whistleblow.
