Miserable failure
I'm sure most of you have seen this, but I can't do a search yet.

Go to google, type in "miserable failure" and click on the "I'm feeling lucky button".

Ahem. That is all.

9. Loosely Orchestrated Effort to get this to happen
A loose band of hundreds, perhaps thousands of web blog writers simply linked the term "Miserable Failure" in their blog entries to the biography of W. Google does its rankings partly by using the number of links to a particular site. With that many people creating that many links from the phrase Miserable Failure", it was only a matter of time before Google's web crawling and ranking algorithm picked up on it, and that entry crept to the top of the search results.

6. Stupid question - the 'I'm feeling lucky" button???
I don't seem to have that, but it's hilarious what comes up first on the page...am I missing something else??

7. It's to the right of the Google Search button
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 12:33 PM by undisclosedlocation
This is at google.com; perhaps you're using the Google toolbar or something.

Edit: The effect, however, is as you describe, ie, you get to see the first hit of the search. So you saw what the poster was pointing you to.

8. You have to go TO google.com OR use the websearch dropdown
on the google bar if you have one, I didn't know that the "I'm feeling lucky" button was there until just now.

10. No quotation marks (it makes a difference)
If you type it in with quotation marks, you get a nice Atlantic article which, judging from the first paragraph, blasts Dubya to hell and gone. Also nice, if less funny.

11. LOL! This makes my day!
Thanks mssb!

FWIW, I typed it in without the quotation marks and it worked just fine.

I did do a double-take to make sure it wasn't http://www.whitehouse.org though.

12. This came up for me
A Miserable Failure"

Will Bush be re-elected? Only if voters wittingly ignore his long list of failures while in office

.....

ith one phrase Dick Gephardt has defined the issue to be decided next November. Can a "miserable failure" of a president win re-election? Bush's victory would testify to a civic failure more dangerous to the American future than any policies implemented or continued during a second Bush term. A majority would have demonstrated that democratic accountability is finished. That you can fail in everything and still be re-elected president.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 01:05 PM by CatWoman
and got the same result

However, when I clicked "search", this was the second listing after that article: http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html

15. Hmmmmmmmm
Even I am not paranoid enough to think that freepers lurking here called Google to get them to move the whitehouse.gov link out of the top spot. I guess we just happened to post this at the same time Google was updating from the latest googlebot crawl. Amazing coincidence though; I did it both ways 20 minutes before you did, and Dubya's pretty picture came up as the I Feel Lucky result for miserable failure, just like the original poster described. Wacky, no?
