'Nother music thread; hey Brits, what about Alabama3?
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 01:37 PM by Atman
Or A3 as they're known here in the states.

My sister lives in Brighton, and claims to know them. They are largely ingored here, except for the one song from the Sopranos soundtrack. But they have some of the most socially relevent lyrics, and they're damn fun to dance to, too!

When I play them here, especially the Exhile In Coldharbour Lane disk, I often get bitches for playing COUNTRY of all things. But anyone I know who has actually sat through the entire cd and listened...they're converted, so to speak.

So howza bout it? Why isn't A3 the shizzle in the US, or are they not even anything over in England, either?

On edit...I intended to include this the first time...

=========

"Woody Guthrie", Alabama 3 (A3)

Another psychopath in Iowa
loading up another round
While the NRA in Columbine
hunt Marilyn Manson down
Powder in the Pentagon
cruel letters in the mail
Some KKK white supremicist
cooking up a dose of race hate

CHORUS
Don't need no country
Don't fly no flag
Cut no slack for the union jack
Stars and stripes have got me jetlagged

Some baby in Afganistan
crying for its' mama now
while the BNP scare refugees
senseless up in Oldham town
Hypocrites in Downing Street
pouring petrol on the name
Satpal cries, asks Paddy
why do we always get the blame

CHORUS

sing a song for the asylum seeker
for the frightened baby on some foreign beach
you'd better bang a gong and pray
they reach a safe harbour

Some mother in Jakarta
lays down her weary head
in some free trade zone compound
here they work you 'til you're dead
Hunger stalks the corridor
famine and disease
I seen the multinationals
walking hand in hand
with globalising marketeers

CHORUS

1. Went looking for a CD of theirs
at the store yesterday, but didn't find any. I would love to have more of their music than just the Sopranos' theme.

3. Amazon has em...
But the fastest way...I have a link to it right on my site, the first album. If they have it, get the double CD. It is kind of a rarity, and only available used, I think, but the second disk is all dance remixes and extended versions of "Woke Up This Morning," or the Soprano's theme.

It is very weird. A mix of old-time redemption, country gospel, dance, techno...they call it "sweet, pretty, country, acid, house music." But it totally rocks. There is a theme of socialism and redemption throughout which freaked me out at first. Hearing a chorus chanting "Mao Tse Tung Said: Change must come through the barrel of a gun!" on one song while espousing a life of cleanliness and 12-step sobriety on another, and railing against "Bourgeoise Parlaimentarianism" on yet another...it really plays with your head. But it is irresistable.

Once I found thier web site and saw that it was all schtick, I could relax a bit. But, for a while I really was afraid to turn people on to it without a disclaimer that it was NOT to be taken too seriously.

Really though...my NotBannedYet link below has it featured on the left nav bar. I just signed up with this Amazon feature, so I'd love to see what happens if someone actually orders something!

(BTW -- sorry for lack of updates since Bush's Brit visit...between the holiday and a page redesign, I haven't bothered to add new content. The redesign should be up tonight or tomorrow, though, with all new 'toons.)
