I just drove across the country (N.J. to L.A.). Ask me anything
So I've started a new life in Southern California, making the long trip with a close friend of mine who was also itching to get out of New Jersey.

Here are some things I've learned about this country during the 3,500+ mile drive:

1) This country is HUGE. It was comforting to see such open space and pristine land in the mid to southwest. I am not used to that living in the most densely populated state in the country.

2) People everywhere, more or less, are the same. Sure, they may speak a little differently or have different lifestyles, but at base they all have the same wants, needs, desires, etc.

3) Arizona is probably the coolest state to drive through.

4) It truly is hot and sunny everyday in LA. Can't wait for the summer.

Also, if there are any LA/SoCal DUers out there interested in maybe showing an out of towner around feel free to PM me. I only have two other friends out here so am looking to meet some new cool people. Thanks!!

1. And I just got home to MD from So. Cal. Isn't that a pisser?
Congrats on your drive. Mrs. V. and I did that 5 1/2 years ago, in reverse, So. Cal. to VA -- LOVED it. What a beautiful country. I couldn't agree more about Arizona, although New Mexico was way cool, too.

BTW, it usually rains in February. I believe it will rain torrents around Monday... Have fun! :hi:

2. Ha! That is funny
Yes, I truly enjoyed all of the drive. It was great seeing parts of the US I've never seen before. Hope you enjoy you time on the East Coast. I figured after 23 years it was time to experience something different.

5. Did you stop at any sites along the way?
I too drove across country to LA and was awed by parts of the country I've never seen. On the way we did the Route 66 thing, stopped at the Merrimack Caverns in Missouri, Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, TX and Grand Canyon, etc. Best road trip ever. :-)

9. My daughter and I are thinking about Merrimac this summer.
We like to camp out.

If you ever make it to MO again go to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. The ruins of a castle there are beautiful!

7. I drove the reverse of that in '98 and continued on up to Boston
Except I went through Nevada, up to Utah and through Colorado.

My trip wasn't fun though, it started out to be, but then turned into the biggest headache and heartache I ever experienced :(.

Overall though, I enjoy the East Coast and can't complain too much.

As to the ex-girlfriend that convinced me to move out here, I haven't seen her since early '99.

8. Remember, the country is tilted, and the fruits and nuts roll out to CA
as they say out there.

Remember, Northern California looks down on Southern California, and Southern California doesn't care.

To become a true Californian, you must not trust any trees that don't burn, any land that doesn't move or slide, and any air that you can't see.

And most of it is much, much nicer than New Jersey. I lived in LA for 17 years, did the cross-country drive 4 times.
