Wisconsin State Assembly Passes "Marriage" bill
To deny gays and lesbians the right to marriage. It also denies civil unions. I was even more upset when I found out 6 Democrats voted for it. I fired off this letter:

You should be ashamed to call yourself a representative of the people of the state of Wisconsin.

By voting for the so-called MARRIAGE BETWEEN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN you have shown that it's OK to discriminate against a group of individuals that you do not agree with. I am saddened that you call yourself a Democrat.

It's funny, you know, that you seek to deny me of basic respect and rights but you will have no problems taking my money for your schools, parks, taxes, etc. Basically you've relegated gays and lesbians to the status held by blacks in years gone by. We should be seen and not heard.

Thanks. Really. You've shown your true colors. I hope you never have to have a friend, family member, or worse, a child, come to you and ask you how you could be so hateful.

---

Sadly, it really didn't make me feel any better.

1. Great lettter, Will
And those Democrats who voted for it SHOULD be ashamed of themselves. It's too much to ask, probably, for Democrats to favor same-sex marriage. But to support such a disgusting, blatantly discriminatory, bigoted piece of shit as this...it's too fucking much.

These constitutional amendments...as well as the proposed "Marriage Protection Amendment" to be voted on in the United States Senate in June...would take away the rights of ordinary Americans such as you, I and other gay and lesbian folks. It's...shameful that this is going on in this country today.

3. Thanks TerryA...
But it served no purpose other than "venting my spleen".

This will likely become law in Wisconsin and I will be a 2nd class citizen even though I've been with my partner for 18 years, longer than nearly every one of my straight friends (some of who are on their 2nd or 3rd marriages.)

So sad that people give into their irrational fears and that others are so adept at playing on them. Sadder still that elected officials are willing to sell of gays and lesbian for political expediency.

2. It is discrimination pure and simple.
The Republicans here engineered this question to be on the same ballot as the Governor's race in November to get all the fundies and neocons hyped up to vote.

Now I'm not a fan of our current Governor at all, but for fuck's sake how can I make it any planer?:

Gay Americans are exactly that: AMERICANS.

5. Excellent letter, for what it was worth
The right wing is slowly eroding our rights in the name of "morality". I don't get their morality, where people live in what is essentially a caste system, whole segments of society are denied rights because of who they love, women face carrying children they don't want and can't afford, people are denied adequate health care because they weren't born rich, anyone can be spied on in myriad ways without reason or warrant, religion is forced on people via the law, and so on, and so on. It actually makes me want to cry sometimes.
