2. I'm not a Democrat, I'm a far-Leftist -
more like a socialist... I am only here at DU, because they welcome Leftists of all stripes.

Bernie Sanders is the type of politician that I could support, if I lived in Vermont.

Can you imagine me being allowed to post on freekrepubliKKK?

I can't do that, nor can I post on lgf, ldott or any other scum-sucking reich-wing website.

4. Nice to meet you
I'm much farther to the center but I think you and I have more in common than I do with anyone on the right. And THAT is my definition of Democrat.

9. Hi! Nice to meet you too.
I would have to agree with your definition, however some of the things that I espouse are not what most Democrats or those close to the center would agree with.

I don't disagree with you or what you're saying, in fact I like your definition of a what a Democrat is.

Peace :hi:

3. I am an anti-Republican
Their policies favor the rich and corporations over working people and/or poor people and they lie about those facts. Their public proselytizers - Tony Snow, Ann Coulter, Cal Thomas, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc - lie pathologically and shamelessly and preach hatred.

5. republican policies are not palatable to the mainstream american...
populace; were they to truly be so, republicans would not have to lie so profusely to maintain their hold on power. everyone has their foibles, but republicans are not able to admit them so that by their own hand, and sins of routine omission, they are incapable of civil governance.

6. Beause the Republicans were such pricks about REA

Rural Electrification Administration.

It brought electricity and phone service to
rural area, against the wishes of private industry
and Republicans in the 1930s.
Their opposition delayed, by several years, the delivery of
services to my homsteader (1911) Grandparents.
They raised a family of six for thirty years before having electricity.
I remember their dislike for Republicans quite clearly.

I've been a Democrat since I knew there was a choice.

Me? I was raised to give a damn about justice and fairness. The Democratic party comes far closer to working for both than the alternatives, even as weak as they are/

I was at a meeting last night and the question was asked. I responded that I was proud to be a member of a political party that was and is standing for social and economic justice. A party that brought us the 40 hour work week, student loan program, social security, the GI Bill.......

19. Speaker Tip O'Neill said
The most important political speech ever given was the Sermon on the Mount. I try to remember the Beatitudes and live my life accordingly to the best of my ability.

The Beatitudes

And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

23. what else would I be?
I'm a biracial, single female from Chicago (that alone should cinch it) whose parents hung out with Commies in the '50s and whose parents' friends were union organizers and musicians and activists who were all active during the civil rights movement and in the cooperative movement and whose mom's parents were a suffragist and union activists. I walked picket lines as a kid and marched for the ERA as a teenager--even though I couldn't yet vote. I think the Bill or Rights is pretty cool and that we should have equal opportunity and that we should put people before profits and protect the environment and keep your fucking laws off my body and help single moms with adequate daycare and educational opportunities and believe that no child should go to bed hungry and that capital punishment is barbaric and I was raised to question authority and to believe in peace and justice and self-determination and I think guns suck and .... *whew* I'm out of breath.

I have always voted Democratic and was PISSED that I wasn't old enough to vote against Reagan his first election. Although I'm quite disillusioned by my party these days, it's still, IMHO, the only game in town that fairly aligns with my beliefs. Although, long-term, I support a three (or more) party system, my first priority is to get these lying, cheating, stealing MFers OUT of the majority. I am grateful to have DU to be able to vent with fairly like-minded individuals.

Why are YOU a Democrat?

But more specifically, because I wish to stand up for people that are too old, too tired from working too damn much, too poor, too black, or too gay to stand up for themselves.

27. "too black or too gay to stand up for themselves"? Excuse me?!
I'm sure you didn't mean it like it sounded, 'cause it sounded REALLY patronizing and offensive!!!! Kind of like that moment when good liberal Phil Donahue absentmindedly rubbed the bald, black head of one of his grown male guests with this dreamy aren't-I-a-good-liberal look in his bottle-cap glasses encased eyes. Like it was not in the LEAST inappropriate that he touch his guest as if he were a little kid because he's a GOOD liberal. Now I LOVE Phil Donahue, and I know his heart's in the right place, but that moment left an indelible impression lasting more than 20 years.

What I'm trying to say, Vash, with all due respect, is nobody is "too black" or "too gay" to stand up for themselves!!! WTF?!

29. Really? You really believe that's so?
Do you honestly think that if it weren't for JFK or LBJ that civil rights legislation would have ever been passed? Would slavery have ended throughout the United States when it did if not for Abraham Lincoln forcing the 14th Amendment upon the states of the Confederacy? Quite frankly, I don't see that ever happening.

It's not being patronizing at all. African-Americans are only 12% of the population; gays are anywhere from 3-12%, depending on whichever estimate you believe. It is entirely impossible for groups that are so hopelessly outnumbered to ever achieve power or even equality without members of the majority standing up and joining them.

I'm sorry if I offended your pride. However, the reality of the situation stands. Unless people from outside an utterly overwhelmed minority lend a hand, that minority has no chance at success. I don't consider it patronizing at all to want to help those who by mere birth alone were put at a severe disadvantage in life. Would you rather I stand idly by and watch the racists and bigots tear the masses apart? Would you rather me join them? I'm sorry, but I will not do that!

But even if I was, I'd probably be a registered independent and would very grudgingly vote Democrat as a lesser of two evils.

Up here I'm a New Democrat, however. Very different from your American Democrats (and especially from what would be called "New Democrats" in the U.S.).
