75 Year Old Grandma Beats Burglar With Trash Can Lid (Grandpa Smacks Him)

Looking back, Vilma and George Hapstak know they shouldn't have fought back. But when they discovered a burglar in their Woodbridge home Monday, instinct took over.

As the intruder tried to escape out of the back door with some jewelry, the 75-year-old grandmother grabbed the closest thing -- a garbage can lid -- and began smashing him over the head.

"I was just so furious that he got in my house," Vilma Hapstak said.

The man managed to escape in a car, but not before George, who turns 76 this month, took a few pokes at him.

"I punched him a couple of times. I was so shocked, I couldn't think of anything else," said George Hapstak, a retired General Motors assembly-line worker who spent several years as a volunteer with a youth boxing program.

"He was standing right in front of me and the trash can was right there, and I picked up the lid and I whacked him in the head," she said.
