hip-hop is a lifestyle (and a lame one)
not an artform (or even a musical genre--unless one redefines the meaning of "music")

25. Apparently your own definition is extremely narrow.
I don't think that all hip-hop is great, or even art, but I also don't think all jazz is great, all rock is great, all classical music is great.

Music is an artistic melding of sound and sometimes language and percussion and it takes many forms.

There is hip-hop music out there that is beautiful, and strong, and poignant (think Wyclef Jean or some of the more upbeat Alicia Keys).

I get the distinct feeling that a lot of this anti-hip-hop/anti-rap sentiment tonight was caused by the crap choice of the Academy in the Best Original Song category. I didn't like the song either, and I didn't think it should have won, but allowing that feeling to invalidate an entire genre of music is juvenile at best.

13. Mind if I make a point?
Hip hop is a culture that speaks to peoples lives, not all but some of us.

It's a culture in the sense Valley Girl or Beach Bum lifestyle is one to others.

Some in one culture may not understand the nature of another, and unfortunately it HUMAN NATURE to disdain something that one does not understand.

I'm not going to go into the roots of the music other than to say that it is very part much of the American psyche.

Hip Hop became what it is because it had too.

Hip Hop exists because, in America, a cookie cutter culture failed to address all of us.

There is even more than one face within Hip Hop itself. Many faces as a matter of fact, of all shades.

As Democrats, I believe we should have open minds, especially about things we don't understand.
