I just saw it for one of my history classes, and I'm pretty sad right now. Here's what I found on the internet that might help you understand why (spoilers!!!) :

If anyone else here has seen it, I'd like to discuss it with you. What did you think?

1. That's one of those films that I've only heard ABOUT
However, another post-Stalinist movie that I HAVE seen is called The Cranes Are Flying. It's a sad but wonderful film about lovers who separated when the young man is drafted into the army during World War II. The young woman loses her family in a bombing raid and moves in with her boyfriend's family, following them as they are relocated to the east.

Three things stand out--the marvelous black and white photography, the fact that a film portraying World War II goes out of its way not to mention Stalin, and the sad/happy ending.

2. That's another one
The prof offered us a choice between "Cranes" And "Ballad". Since Ballad of a Soldier was on DVD, we chose that one. I'm both happy and sad that we did. I think that we both need to see the film we haven't. Check if your local library has a copy of Ballad.
