1. Paul Rodgers looks like Danny Bonaduce sans the flaming red hair.
It creeps me out.

2. No and HELL NO!!

And I will flame because it is Queen without Freddie. I listened to some of their stuff on the website and I was in tears - it sounded like a fucking Bad Company concert doing a Queen tribute concert.

Queen had 2 other extremely talented singers who could have continued on the Queen tradition without having to bring in an outside singer (and yes, Paul Rogers has some vocal skills no question about that either).

I'd rather see a Brittney SPears concert then waste one penny on this travesty. Why Brian May and Roger Taylor, two men who did about a quarter of the lead vocals on all the Queen records, didn't handle the lead themselves is beyond me. Some of my favorite Queen songs were song by one of those two (notably "I'm in Love with my Car" and "'39" to name a few).

This whole thing has been jeopardizing Queen's position as my #2 favorite band of all time. I'm thinking Pink Floyd might be ripe for taking over that slot

EDIT NOTE: And btw, it's not even all of Queen. John Deacon retired. Why not retire the name and call their band something new to not insult those of us who were diehard Queen fans since forever

4. Amen to that. It's gotta be all about the money for May & Taylor
to use the Queen name. When Freddie died they pledged that Queen would be no more out of respect. Guess that respect dried up along with the cash flow.

6. Freddie wanted them to continue on
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 02:30 PM by LynneSin
but what I don't understand is why they had to bring in an outsider for their lead. I mean, this was an opportunity for Roger Taylor and Brian May to shine because both of them had great vocals, especially Taylor. I would have rather they brought in an outside drummer and put Taylor in as lead and then allow May to do a few songs of his own.

And the worse it it wasn't the remaining members of Queen, just two of them. Even Robert Plant & Jimmy Page had the courtesy to not call their work together back in the 90s Led Zeppelin since John Paul Jones was not involved (and obviously Bonham wasn't since he was dead). BTW, Bassist John Deacon retired about 5 years ago.

7. Yes, that is gallant & typical of Freddie, BUT the name could have been
subtly changed to reflect respect for the loss of the core of Queen.

5. thank you for your post I so so so have to agree with you
Several months ago I bought a DVD of Queen live in 1982 I think at Wembly-Freddie you can't take your eyes off him. This is like Charles marrying Camilla and oh yes she's a complete substitute for Diana? Freddie fans like me and my friends, just say NO to this abortion-Queen with Paul Rogers.
Have a good day.

8. Queen fan for 15 years...
...and I wouldn't even travel 2 hours to see the show when this tour came near me last year. It's NOT Queen without Freddie and John. I'm not flaming you, glad you had fun and enjoyed the show, but- it's just not.

Point 1: Freddie WOULD NOT have wanted them to hang it up.
Point 2: Yes they don't have John, but HE GAVE THEM HIS BLESSING FOR THIS!
Point 3: ROGER TAYLOR!
Point 4: BRIAN MAY!
Point 5: I love the stuff Paul did w/ The Firm (yes, I'm a Led Zeppelin mark!) & solo, and yeah even Free & Bad Co, but just to SPITE ALL OF YOU, I'M GOING TO BUY ALL THE FREE AND BAD CO ALBUMS HE IS ON! FUKU!
Point 6: Queen hasn't played this shithole gods-forsaken dump state FloriDUH since November 3, 1978! Urm, I was only 3 going on 4 then! Hey, I still would have gone!
Point 7: Y'all fartknockers are acting like Paul Rodgers is some chode like Axl! Can I just go do massive bong hits now please!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Point 8: This isn't like INXS! Now, they could go and bill it as "Queen". And they have EVER legal right to. But no! They took the high road, and made it Queen + PR. Does INXS bill themselves "INXS + JD Fortune"? HELL NO!

Your witness!

12. No one is begruding the surviving members from touring
We just would have prefered if they had done it without Paul Rodgers. This isn't to belittle the skills that Paul Rodgers has, just don't want him doing lead for our group.

Anyone with even a slight knowledge of Queen and their music knows that Freddie Mercury did NOT sing all of the Queen songs, he did about 3/4ths of them. If Queen was to continue on, why not have the other two singers in the group - Roger Taylor and Brian May do vocals. Sure, the show wouldn't have the charismatic lead stylings of Freddie Mercury BUT it would have still Queen doing the songs including opportunities to hear some great songs rarely done live because they weren't 'Freddie' songs. And even still, I wouldn't have had a problem with Brian or Roger singing some of those 'Freddie' songs.

We're purists - so sue us!

14. "OUR group"???? Sorry. It doesn't belong to you.
You may own the earlier CDs. But you don't own the group. May and Taylor can do whatever the hell they want.

You can choose to ignore them, and it won't matter at all to May and Taylor. After all, it's THEIR group.

16. When you love the music as much as us diehard fans do
it's our music too. Paul Rodgers is ruining it and for the diehard fans like myself, we are not happy. Read the thread - it's obvious I'm not alone in this sentiment!

17. You may not be alone. That doesn't mean you're right.
Like I said, you can simply choose to ignore them.

R.E.M. used to be my favorite band. Then, they seemed to lose all originality. I have simply chosen to ignore just about everything they've done since 1993 or so. I enjoy all the old stuff and ignore what they're doing now. Works out well.

There were only actually about 10 people farther away from the stage than I was, but it was still good.

13. Not trying to be a hater here, but...
Can Queen with Paul Rodgers possibly sound anything like Queen with Freddie Mercury? Did you find any similarities, or would you say that these were two very different experiences?

15. Would you prefer they go out and find a look-alike, sound-alike
like Journey did? I saw the "new" Journey. Yeah, he looks like Perry, he SOUNDS like Perry. But it still ain't Steve Perry.

18. Would have preferred they use the talented singers already in their band
Brian May and Roger Taylor should have done it themselves - you know they can, there are at least 1-2 songs on every album with one of them as lead singer (especially in the earlier works)

19. I was asking for info...
...not making up my mind. The original poster only said something about being true to Freddie's memory, which implies some sort of similarity. I was interested in the eyewitness' experience.

A good sound-alike might be better than a voice that sounds out of place with the material. Might be.

21. That's true. I'm just saying that although imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery, it often just comes across as weird when someone tries to pretend to be someone they're not.

The Journey guy kind of freaked me out. He was too close to Steve Perry. Too weird.

I liked it, for example, when Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen. He didn't try to be David Lee Roth. Didn't sound like him. But the old tunes still sounded fine, I thought. Different, but good.

20. All I've heard is "Fat Bottomed Girls"
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 12:35 PM by Orrex
A local station (ClearChannel, of course) plays it about 10 times a day, which is more than they've ever played any other Queen song, as far as I know.

To me it sounds nothing like Queen and everything like a college coverband with a good sound tech and a skilled guitarist.

Queen died along with Freddie. There can be only one.
