Things you did not do until adulthood that most people did before 18

1. I did not get my driver's license.
2. I never used matches or a lighter.
3. Never used a mop.
4. Never held a gun.
5. Never went to a rock cencert.

I eventually did these things, but people have been shocked at various times that I never had experience with these things until after I left home.

I was well into my 20's....

I must have been 26 or 27 before I first shot a gun.
So you aren't alone, eh?

I had and still have a tremendous phobia. I have the license now but I still don't use it because I am basically still terrified. So much for the theory that if you face your fears they go away.

I tried (unsuccesfully, as it turned out) to become a smoker while in college, during the 3 years I lived away from home...

I've never done the other things with the exceptions of having a driver's license, or using a mop!

The other thing that most people have done before 18 that I didn't...was be kissed.

That happened the summer before I turned 19...... :blush:

1) I didn't have sex until I was 21
2) Didn't get drunk until I was 18
3) Never rode on an airplane until I was 25
4) Didn't go on a date until I was 18
5) Never even tasted coffee until I was in college

I never got drunk or drank coffee until 18 either.

1) still have not had sex
2) still have not gotten drunk
3) did not ride in an airplane until I was 39
4) did not go on a date until I was 28
5) still have not tasted coffee - except for a piece of "coffee candy" somebody gave me at halloween which I quickly spit out. So I got the taste of coffee but not from actual coffee.

From Nikia's list, as best I can remember
1) driver's license I got at age 22, although I was forced into driver's ed the summer after my freshman year
2) went to a concert at age 22
3) using a mop - I cannot remember mopping anything until I opened my bookstore at age 29.

Cannot remember the rest of the list (edit - okay - matches, I do not remember any stinking matches. A gun - I shot one as a webelos when we did some gun safety thing. I think that was a bb rifle. I have never held nor fired a working gun.)

Things I did early
1) Took the ACT as a junior :o (this is intentionally lame)
2) made my own cookies for a birthday treat at school in the 5th grade
3) bought Easmann Kodak stock as a HS freshman (3 whole shares and the minimum comission nearly killed me. I bought another 30 shares a year later when it had fallen $20 a share.)
4) stayed home alone at my parents' house for two weeks when I was 18 and my family went to NYC
5) at age 17 was in a wind storm that knocked over our camper

and didn't ride an inverted roller coaster until 21.

Seriously, my parents forbade me to have them. I bought my first pair from a thrift store when I was in college...away from home.

Of course, now I'm a single mother with credit problems.... so there's that.

I wasn't a very adventurous child...

drunk at 15, laid and stoned at 16, jailed at 17....shot at when 18......turning 21 was mellow.

As in, were you in combat or something or was this as the result of some other insanity?

And never flew in a plane until I was 22 I think. Still haven't done any kind of drug, and
since I'm 36, I don't suppose I ever will!

But I love driving now. I've actually had to cut it back in recent years, 'cause, it's not something you should have as a "hobby," but for me--fun.

I can't really think of many things I didn't do before 18. Sex, drugs, punk an roll, fights, tennis ball bombs at the local porno shop, shooting hicks with urine in a water gun, inverted sex on a slide at a local elementary school, and ect...

Cigarettes I'm up to a half pack a day, and sex, well, it's me.

But I will be moving when the house sells.

I did learn to drive at age 14. :)

On edit: And I did drink a straight-up martini on my 2nd birthday. My godmother had put it onto a table and not paid attention. My parents said I slept extremely well that night. :)

Uh, lessee: marijuana (18), driving, (19) seeing an SO naked under good lighting, (22--shut up) being seen by an SO naked under good lighting, (22--shut UP) use of illicit drug other than marijuana, (24) sex (mumbles incoherently--shut UP). And I'm sure I'm leaving out a couple of things.

Without TMI, I do regret some of the things I didn't do, just because I wonder how different my life would have been if I would have taken more risks. :blush:

Honest to Dog. I didn't lose my virginity to myself until after I'd lost it to a woman.

I've met one other (male) person like you who apparently didn't figure it out until after starting college. Yeah. I don't know how he survived, either.

Tops the list, I lost my Virginity at the age of 23...

all the sex/drugs/driving stuff I started pretty early on.

BUT.

I'm 36 years old, and I have still never...

1) Lived in a suburb
2) Had a credit card
3) Broken a bone
4) Missed voting in an election I was eligible to vote in
5) Gotten married
6) gained or lost more than 20 lb since I reached my adult size at age 13
7) changed a diaper
8) gone skiing, jogging, or ice skating.

Didn't drive until I was 29.
Pierced my ears when I was 24 (and did 7 piercings).

I never held a gun- My first time holding and shooting a gun was when I was 27. I discovered that I am an excellent shot. I also felt very weird and don't want to do it again.

I never had sex- My first time was on the night of my first marriage. It was two months before my 20th birthday. (I have several friends from college who waited longer. One of them, a very smart, sophisticated, elegant girl who you'd never guess was a heavy metal chick, lost her virginity on her wedding night at the age of 28.)

I never had a NONPLATONIC date until I was 19. I went to both my proms, but one was stag with a group of friends and one was with a friend who was secretly gay.

I never had a drink- My first drink was when I was 20, while I was living in Europe with my first husband. I never did drink illegally. (I was the life of the party, I tell ya) And I have never been drunk.

I never took any illegal drugs (still haven't done that)

I never tried a cigarette. I smoked a cigarette for the first time in my mid- 20s and continued for about a month during a very stressful time.

I never said a swear word other than "Damn", "crap", or "hell" (and no, I was not raised in a convent). Uh, now I've said them all (I think I may have even made up a few, lol) and I say them too often.

I actually DID go to a rock concert when I was 17, but I lied like a rug to my parents, who thought I was at a drama/ debate tournament. I OPENLY went to my first concert at 18.

I didn't have a child until I was 27 (Hey, I live in Oklahoma, teen pregnancy capital of the world)

I'm sure there are lots more, but these are the ones I can think about now. The bottom line is that I was pretty squeaky clean as a kid. My way to rebel was to go around looking like Lydia from Beetlejuice. Pretty tame stuff.

I'm not too wild and crazy as a grownup either.


Things I did early:


Took the SAT in 7th grade as part of a special program for gifted kids.

Took the ACT in the summer before junior year

Started wearing a training bra at age 8 (if THAT wasn't embarrassing enough, we have the NEXT thing)

Had my first period at age 9. THANK GOD I had it once and it didn't come back until I was 12.

Due to nothing more than my date of birth, I started school several months younger than my peers and was the youngest person in my graduating class.

I started college early- I took summer college classes (1 class each summer) the summers after my sophomore and junior years of high school.

I moved away from home at 17 (to go to college)


My brother had the opposite situation- Due to HIS date of birth, he started several months OLDER than the rest of his class. He missed the birthday cutoff by 3 days.

Also: Never been kissed, drunk, stoned, drugged, or pretty much anything else for that matter.
Could count the hugs I've recieved on the fingers of one hand.

What's worse is that where I lived until just now, everyone starts getting drunk AND stoned from 14 (Ever heard of a place called Nimbin?) ... and not drinking = ostracism. (Esp. since my friends thought I just didn't drink rather than couldn't... as a result kept spiking drinks/ attmepting to coerce me into drinking... not cool)

Therefore I got out of that hell-hole as quickly as I could. Thus the 17 at uni & looking at doing the really REALLY advanced stuff.

And my best friend's son is the oldest in his class. He missed the deadline by a matter of a half hour.

1. Driver's License - Got that on schedule but a little late. I was eligible, but had to wait til December that year because I was very sick and didn't fully recover til then.

2. Matches and lighters - I used them, not to smoke, but I did and do like to play with candles. :-)

3. Mop - Yes, I mopped. And this was when you hand to clean the floor first. Let that dry, then put down a separate layer of wax.

4. Gun - I shot a pellet gun when I was about 9, I think. It was Jr marksman thing the military (I don't know if it was the army or the marines) had set up at the state fair. I wasn't a bit interested, but my family thought it would be cute or something. :eyes: Anyway I remember feeling a GREAT DEAL of pressure to do it. So I did and did terribly. I was exceedingly nervous, almost shaking. I think I hit the sheet way off the target. And I harangued them all afterwards to NEVER ask me to do anything like that again, and why would you think I would be interested in something like that? They didn't.

5. Rock Concert - Yep waited til college to do that. I didn't have many friends in high school so I didn't do a lot of typical high school things. It was a Billy Joel concert.


The rest:

6. Sex - Didn't have sex til I was 23 and out of college. It was OK, but turns out that was the best it was ever going to get.

7. Alcohol - Didn't have a drink until college. My parents didn't have alcohol around while we were growing up.

8. Pot - Never tried it, nor any other illegal substances. I don't think it should be illegal, but until it's not, I probably won't touch it.

I have to say now though that if I could I'd buy a scoomba to go with the roomba and let Robots clean my floors all they wanted!

Ever notice some of these new-fangled "ab machines" simply mimic cleaning your floors the "old-fashioned" way?
