Fox's Mike Straka: Teri Hatcher's "disingenuous" Vanity Fair revelations

"Desperate Housewife" Teri Hatcher is in a lose-lose situation after coming out with the revelation that she was sexually abused by her uncle when she was young.

Yes, it was brave of her to confront the animal who abused her, and at least one other girl who committed suicide — and as a result this monster is in jail for 14 years. For that we say thank you, Ms. Hatcher.

But the fact that this story comes out in a cover story for Vanity Fair after its best-selling Oscar issue ever, featuring nude photos of Scarlet Johansson and Keira Knightley, is a bit disingenuous, to say the least. Hatcher was quoted in the article saying that she had thought about coming out with her story before but didn't want it to be "tabloid" fodder. OK ... but it's all right to be Vanity Fair fodder?

Hatcher did what she had to do in order to put her evil uncle away, however, her story didn't need to be told to a mass audience. Isn't there anything sacred to celebrities? Is there not one thing they'd like to keep to themselves?

Anyone that has the courage to do this should be COMMENDED!!! KUDOS TO HER!!!

However, I have to say I'm more than a little put off by the cover of the magazine. Just my opinion, but the pictures seem to be about making rape look sexy - rather than empowering a survivor.

It's a great magazine but their cover shots are always trying to sell some half-dressed woman. But it sells the mag, and if you open it up, there are a lot of good articles. Way too many ads, but what the hell.

I haven't read the Teri Hatcher article yet, but I did read about in the San Jose paper; it's tragic what happened to that young girl.

Practically all magazines post half-dressed women. I don't care about that, but I think it's sick to post a half-dressed survivor in a provocative pose.

But I don't think they care; they just want to sell magazines, and a half-dressed Teri Hatcher probably sells mags.

and it may help a lot of other people who have been in the same situation. They'll know that they're not alone, that this has happened to other people too, and that you can nail the bastard and get him tossed in jail.

If she told her story to the police and no one else, it becomes public record, someone digs it up, and the story gets written anyway. Teri Hatcher's people are doing PR 101 here and controlling the story.

What a dumbass this guy is.

And furthermore, this is the type of crime where victims often feel humiliated or shamed, and so it often goes unreported. Maybe some victim of molestation will come feel a little stronger and come forward.

What I find most interesting is how he complains about how we always have to hear about celebrities and their personal lives, as if Magic Johnson was thinking one day "What can I do for some press. Hey, what about getting HIV?"

He wrote an entire article about celebrities. He's perpetuating the culture of celebrity. Maybe the reason we hear so much about celebrities is because spineless hacks like Mike Straka won't cover real news.

Go hump yourself with a piece of splintered balsa wood. Is there nothing you news commentators won't whine about?

since she played Penny Parker on the MacGyver series, and know a little about her personal life through some "6-degree" acquaintances. Through the years she has always been very protective of her privacy. I have enormous respect for her and the way she raises her daughter. Teri does not have a huge coterie of PR folks. She handles her own bookings and press relations. She usually doesn't even use a publicist. Over the years, she has hinted at a difficult childhood and a strained relationship with her parents, but never gave any details. This explains everything, and my respect for her has only grown with the way she's handled it. Teri does things on her own terms, and she seems to have finally found the courage to let go of this horrifying secret.

Mike Straka is an idiot who chooses to stereotype and project his questionable moral thinking onto someone who has handled her challenges with grace and dignity.

off of writing an article about celebrities, even if he IS saying "I don't want to know anything more about their personal lives" he is in fact profiting off of the very phenomenon that he decries.

I have to say that putting this guy behind bars was good, or I would sound like an *ssh*l*... BUT going public with the story is going to hurt my job by diminishing my audience in the case that you inspire other abused women to come forward...
