Fox's Mike Straka: Teri Hatcher's "disingenuous" Vanity Fair revelations
Grrr! Teri Hatcher Abused
Wednesday, March 08, 2006
By Mike Straka

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,187268,00.html

"Desperate Housewife" Teri Hatcher is in a lose-lose situation after coming out with the revelation that she was sexually abused by her uncle when she was young.

Yes, it was brave of her to confront the animal who abused her, and at least one other girl who committed suicide — and as a result this monster is in jail for 14 years. For that we say thank you, Ms. Hatcher.

But the fact that this story comes out in a cover story for Vanity Fair after its best-selling Oscar issue ever, featuring nude photos of Scarlet Johansson and Keira Knightley, is a bit disingenuous, to say the least. Hatcher was quoted in the article saying that she had thought about coming out with her story before but didn't want it to be "tabloid" fodder. OK ... but it's all right to be Vanity Fair fodder?

Hatcher did what she had to do in order to put her evil uncle away, however, her story didn't need to be told to a mass audience. Isn't there anything sacred to celebrities? Is there not one thing they'd like to keep to themselves?

2. What a hypocritical dumbass
"I for one don't want to hear any more personal junk from celebrities. I don't want to hear about their politics, and I don't want to hear about their sex lives or their vices. I don't care if Tom Cruise is gay or straight. I don't care that Ellen DeGeneres is dating Portia de Rossi, or if Sean Penn is a Democrat.

What I chiefly want to know about celebrities is this: are you making a movie that I want to see? Are you in a television show that I want to record on my DVR, and is your next CD or single going to be catchy?

When I interview celebrities, I want to know about the work, the message of the film and how they go about choosing or writing those scripts."

Straka on 2/9: "Armstrong sold out when he started dating Sheryl Crow soon after dumping his wife, only to separate with the rocker a few months after announcing their engagement...Most of our beloved celebrities can't stay in their respective relationships.

From the adorable Jamie-Lynn DiScala of "Sopranos" fame, to Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, to Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear, to Brad and Jen, to Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards — and you may recall Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid — Hollywood is one big quickie for the rich and beautiful.

Marriage to them is something to make headlines with..."

Fucking hypocrite.

3. I think she deserves a lot of respect for coming forward.

She helped a young women see justice.

However, I have to say I'm more than a little put off by the cover of the magazine. Just my opinion, but the pictures seem to be about making rape look sexy - rather than empowering a survivor.

5. VF does this all the time
It's a great magazine but their cover shots are always trying to sell some half-dressed woman. But it sells the mag, and if you open it up, there are a lot of good articles. Way too many ads, but what the hell.

I haven't read the Teri Hatcher article yet, but I did read about in the San Jose paper; it's tragic what happened to that young girl.

17. They have sexy photos for stories about incest?
Practically all magazines post half-dressed women. I don't care about that, but I think it's sick to post a half-dressed survivor in a provocative pose.

23. You're right, it's sick
But I don't think they care; they just want to sell magazines, and a half-dressed Teri Hatcher probably sells mags.

4. What she did is Awesome,
and it may help a lot of other people who have been in the same situation. They'll know that they're not alone, that this has happened to other people too, and that you can nail the bastard and get him tossed in jail.

:applause: Way to Go Ms. Hatcher!

6. For someone who works in the media, Mike Straka knows nothing about it.
If she told her story to the police and no one else, it becomes public record, someone digs it up, and the story gets written anyway. Teri Hatcher's people are doing PR 101 here and controlling the story.

What a dumbass this guy is.

And furthermore, this is the type of crime where victims often feel humiliated or shamed, and so it often goes unreported. Maybe some victim of molestation will come feel a little stronger and come forward.

What I find most interesting is how he complains about how we always have to hear about celebrities and their personal lives, as if Magic Johnson was thinking one day "What can I do for some press. Hey, what about getting HIV?"

He wrote an entire article about celebrities. He's perpetuating the culture of celebrity. Maybe the reason we hear so much about celebrities is because spineless hacks like Mike Straka won't cover real news.

Go hump yourself with a piece of splintered balsa wood. Is there nothing you news commentators won't whine about?

9. I have followed Teri's career
since she played Penny Parker on the MacGyver series, and know a little about her personal life through some "6-degree" acquaintances. Through the years she has always been very protective of her privacy. I have enormous respect for her and the way she raises her daughter. Teri does not have a huge coterie of PR folks. She handles her own bookings and press relations. She usually doesn't even use a publicist. Over the years, she has hinted at a difficult childhood and a strained relationship with her parents, but never gave any details. This explains everything, and my respect for her has only grown with the way she's handled it. Teri does things on her own terms, and she seems to have finally found the courage to let go of this horrifying secret.

Mike Straka is an idiot who chooses to stereotype and project his questionable moral thinking onto someone who has handled her challenges with grace and dignity.

10. Here's some irony: this pinhead, the Faux writer, is making HIS money
off of writing an article about celebrities, even if he IS saying "I don't want to know anything more about their personal lives" he is in fact profiting off of the very phenomenon that he decries.

Wotta maroon.

11. between the lines...
I have to say that putting this guy behind bars was good, or I would sound like an *ssh*l*... BUT going public with the story is going to hurt my job by diminishing my audience in the case that you inspire other abused women to come forward...

12. Fox News. Right. They're just trying to distract people from the
JackMeOff article that's in there, and in doing so, they'll probably make more people buy the issue.

Morans!

Oh, and Teri Hatcher's really hot.

16. Can I tell about the crappy and I mean crappy things that happened...
in my childhood and make the cover of Vanity Fair looking all dolled up and sexy in a bikini? (well, maybe not)

I'm getting cynical in my pre-middle age. :(

Let's not forget some of the articles Vanity Fair has been publishing (Sy Hersh, etc).
