7. Yup, both
I only wish the DKs had lasted as long as the GD

And I'm proud to note that during the DKs obscenity trial (which ended the band), one of their strongest public defenders was Frank Zappa

8. I look like a Deadhead...
...and even though I love much of the music from the mid 60s through the mid 70s, the "Dead" never did it for me.

Dead Kennedy's, on the other hand, esp Jello Biafra, always score major points for their pure anti-establishment message and audacity. When I was 100% metalhead teenager in the 80s, they were one of the really cool, hip post-punk bands. Also, The Cro Mags...

10. The Dead were MUCH better live than on album
they never really captured their spirit on recordings. Also, the rebellion of the 60's was about the possibilities of widespread affluence. It was a time when middle America was relatively prosperous, and that prosperity was tearing down social conventions.

The DKs did well on both media, and reflected the difference in their era. The rebellion of the late '70s and 1980s was an angrier more cynical rebellion. The possibilities the 60s had opened up vanished with gas rationing, inflation, and homelessness. Punk was born in a bankrupt mid-70s New York City.

27. Yeah, a whole 'nother ball of wax.
That said, I never felt the need to spread 'the good news' (heh heh) about the Dead to people who weren't that interested. Tickets were hard enough to come by as it was.

13. Don't forget JB's other music projects and esp. the spoken word albums
which have woken up not a few younger people who grew up addicted to the Reagan/Bush KoolAid.

:hi:

Zappa was tremendously articulate speaking on the talk show circuit about censorship, including on Johnny Carson. Don't suppose GE/NBC/Jay Lame-o would have that now........

:yourock: Rest in peace Frank

20. "Holiday in Cambodia" and "California Uber Alles" aint bad songs
but I'd be lying if I said I spend a whole lot of time listening to the DKs-- so I'm not sure if that qualifies me as a "fan".

Deadhead? Hell yes. Managed to hit something like 100+ shows while in my prime. Where do I sign.

46. Dead Kennedys, Dead Brain Cells, Dead Can Dance,
Death, Death Angel, some Dead Milkmen, Laughing Dead, deadhorse (rules),

. . . but as far as the Grateful Dead, a big "thanks, but no thanks" on that one. Not my dance.

Get the DK's On Broadway DVD. Very few live shows captured on tape exude the amount energy displayed in the pit this one. And to think that I visited Frisco at the time this show was going on. The people look very much like the same people I see at concerts now.
