Shadehouses And Septics
Because of a PM I read, I thought I'd announce address something rather important...

Septic IS a term for American, yes, and yes again, it IS short for 'Septic tank' BUT it is not, I repeat NOT considered an insult, nor have I ever seen it used as such.. I'll try to explain:

1) Australia still has some ryhming slang, cos' we're part British, so, for instance, there are terms like 'Ducks 'n' geese' (Police) and 'Kyhber Pass' (Arse) and 'geek' (peek), note that there is considered to be no relation between the two, no more than a butcher's hook has nothing to do with a look.

So, 'Septic Tank' = Yank is no insult, there is no comparison attempted... please take no offense...

O.K. perhaps I'm bieng paranoid, but I would very much rather NOT offend my new American friends...

Are we square, then? :dilemma: ?

Please post so I know you read it!

5. IIRC? Sorry but Australians don't talk to people
outside their little community much so I've no idea what IIRC is. I'm starting to remember Archie Roach, though. Don't forget I'm only 17 btw...

7. No need to apologise, I thought IIRC
was a place, and Archie Roach 's music was so old, a 17 yo wouldn't know it, that's all.

:-) :hi:
Don't worry, you're a friend.

Some other guy in the lounge called me a "MotherF*cker" though... (without the asterisk, silly) and to be honest, I found it rather disturbing.... oh well, "Blue_Jay"...

Though I did hear you use it a lot more in America, so perhaps he didn't mean it as harsh as I took it. (I was in a conversation with someone else too! How rude!)

8. in some areas of my world MF would be considered a
compliment...it is not WHAT is said as much as HOW it is said...if it is said with love and affection then it is NOT derogatory...

not having been in that paticular conversation I can not comment on that person's intentions.

9. Aaaah no, this was the derogatory sort
Hear what you're saying, but no, it was fairly clear. Then the person put me on their ignore list, so... well what can you do.

If you can see this (Which you can't)... I bear you no ill will, Blue Jay, I am a little hurt though.

just kidding

hubby worked as a commercial/industrial journeyman plumber for some 25yrs, there's little i've heard since throwing in together that would trip me out in that regard i.e. http://www.septicsystems.com/?gclid=CKSx3oXz24MCFUiICwodSzUZ5g

19. I understand how you mean it, but...
...but many Americans will not. Offense is always in the eye of the beholder, so unless you want to waste an asterisk (that could be poking fun at Bush) every time, you might want to avoid its casual use.

I did enjoy your explanation, though. I'd always assumed that "septic" was used as a mild perjorative. It's nice to know that it's not always meant that way.
