3 AM "The Song Remains the Same" and Text messaging
Well yesterday afternoon my wife and I got around to watching "The Song Remains the Same" that we had taped in the wee hours of Thursday morning. It was on the FUSE network which openly encouraged text messaging while this movie aired. Only 50 cents and you got your message on a national network. The fact that this originally aired at about 3 AM didn't help matters.

but first about the movie....

OMG! What a self absorbed drug addled crapfest that was. Neither of us had ever seen it before having somehow avoided going to the local planetarium around midnight for our entire lives. We were laughing so hard we had to keep rewinding the DVR to see if what we just saw was what we had just seen. I understand that the special effects of the day were not what they are now but that has nothing to do with the "plot" that clearly was the result of a mixture of a LOT of pot, some acid, and fawning yes-men who must have provided some sort of positive feedback on the following:

American Depression era Mobsters with long hair and beards wildly roaming the English countryside doing drive by shootings AND still being able to surprise the Wolfman, the man without a face, and the big boss who were playing some sort of Nazi Risk/Chess game inside the manor they shot up BEFORE they rushed in all surprise like.

:wow:

and that was just the beginning.

We also got to see how Robert Plant's kids and DOG looked exactly like him as they took a walk in the country side while he was fully dressed and ready to jump on stage and be a ROCK STAR!!! should that be necessary.

Some sort of Viking kitty re-enactment mixed in with a spot of Lord of the Rings mixed in with absurd Phallic symbol imagery and a freakin' white horse.

THEN we got to the concert footage. This movie must have been part of the basis for the Stonehenge segment of "This is Spinal Tap" as Led Zeppelin (god love'em) looked totally dwarfed on the Madison Square Garden stage. Plant was completely off with the timing of the lyrics and the whole band sounded really flat. Regardless of whatever the hell that thing in Plant's pants was his MANLY ROCK STAR on stage antics came off a little ...uh...."light" let's just say ( not that there anything....) . Could they not afford a new violin bow strings for Page or was that for effect?

:silly:

Okay now about the text messaging.

Lots of mentions of "Fatties" and there appears to be some sort of angst built up between Zeppelin fans and Greenday fans.

But the ones that will stand the test of time have to be.

"I poke badgers with spoons"

and

"Waffles shall rule the Earth!!!"

We agreed to act like none of this happened and just go back to loving Zeppelin like we used to.

1. I was underimpressed with the movie too ...
the "sub-plot" shit was stupid and the concert footage itself was flat. I had the album, but when I went to CDs, I didn't bother to replace it.

However, I just ordered from BMG Music "How The West Was Won" 3CD set (in the clearance bin, so with standard shipping, it'll cost me $13.50) and I've heard good stuff about that.

10. Even the members of Led Zeppelin admit it was a crapfest
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 10:43 AM by LynneSin
They kept putting it on the backburner because the concert footage sucked and let's face it, everyone but John Paul Jones was pretty fucked up on something. Each member, including Peter Grant, was suppose to come up with their fantasy sequence (Grant's was the gangster scene). The concert footage was from MSG in 1973 and yet the movie was never released until sometime before Presense (1977)

For concert movies, well, it pretty much sucked. But as a diehard LZ fan, I still love it. Led Zeppelin was pretty much against anyone recording their concerts so there is very little out there except TSRTS and the more recent Led Zeppelin DVD released (which is much better than TSRTS).

I own the DVD because let's face it, I'm a Led Zeppelin fan. But even I will admit to crap when I see it. When I play it, it's mainly as background music.

12. I guess everyone thought I'd come in here all pissy
although I love the Rain Song sequence - but only because I wish I was the girl in the tower :eyes:

I was actually a Pink Floyd's "The Wall" fan when it came to late night movies

Whether it was from Pink Floyd or not.

My two favorite kind of movies

Man finds himself out his element and must adapt
Man goes batshit crazy in a hotel room.

14. Our High School had two factions for the late night movies
The Rocky Horror group and The Wall group. I was a part of the latter. I remember getting totally shitfaced and singing along with the movie at the top of my lungs

9. Agreed. The movie stinks.
But the movie version of "Since I've Been Loving You" is my absolute favorite recording of that song.
