OMG! Just captured a GHOST ORB with camera! Not Kidding!! PIX

For Heidi in the Nighthawks thread, I went outside and took several shots of a flowering citrus tree in my backyard. All basically the same angle, basically the same shot.

BUT in one there is what looks like what some people call a ghost orb!

It was dark, no extra light out, not even the moon because it's very cloudy out tonight. I just did several point and shoot snaps from one position.

Here are all three pics...ghost orb in number three. Very spooky

3. That's a lens aberration
It's called coma, or flare, or simply a "ghost image." Happens often with lenses that aren't coated or aren't sufficiently coated.

Have never had this in any pics taken with this digital. Have had it for five years.

8. I can't find any tech on that model
But few lenses are perfect. I've got one that cost $1,500 that'll catch some flare under certain conditions. Light can be very unforgiving.

9. hmmmm
I took the pics while standing in almost total darkness...no outside lights on, and so dark was guessing on where the tree was in relation to where I knew I was in my backyard...but, of course there was light from the flash... :shrug:

11. I found that one
but I didn't scroll down far enough.

It has an f 2.8 lens and a fixed ISO equivalent of only 140, so when it's dark the lens is wide open. The wider the lens opening (aperture), the more likely it is to flaw, especially at wide angle.

I wouldn't worry about it. Like I said, almost all lenses do this sometimes.

14. That one kid on there cracks me up...He'll say,"Check out this awesome
orb!" and the TAPS owner will sigh,"lint on the lens"...gets me laughing every time. Did you see the one with the light house? That was pretty cool. :hi:
