Is the Church World Service legit?

My mom is asking -- they want her to sign a petition re: Darfur.

1. They've been in operation since 1946.

Judging from GuideStar, they are quite legitimate. For a large scale international group, they appear to have a bare bones paid staff but many volunteers--always a good sign.

GuideStar is an excellent resource for information about charities and non-profits, but you must register. It's free for personal use. I frequently have recommended them to library patrons.

GuideStar generally has the IRS information available. I highly recommend them.

3. YES!

They are the agency that the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) works with. Whenever a donation is made through UMCOR, 100% of contributions go directly to relief aid (overhead is paid by church apportionments and other means).

I can't say enough good about CWS. :thumbsup:
