I bombed out in the Irish movie rental dept today. Damn.
We're hangin' at the homestead with the kids tonite and I thought it would've been great to rent "The Secret of Roan Innish" and "Waking Ned Devine" but the video store didn't have either of them. Wouldn't that have been a great St. Patrick's Day double billing?? Oh well...
:grr:

Instead, we rented some silly kid movie called "Leapin' Leprochauns"....:eyes: What we go through for our kids....

The good news is I also picked up "The Constant Gardener" and "Walking the Line", neither of which we've seen yet, but we'll watch after the kids are in bed.

Aren't you all just absolutely fascinated to know the minutaie of my movie rental choices?? heheheh. :D

funny you should mention that movie, cuz when I was at the video store, the clerk mentioned the very same one as an excellent movie recommendation. I'd never heard of it before, so it's nice to see that pix and I'll jot down the title for next time.

10. Next time you need an Irish rental (some not for kiddies)
The Roddy Doyle Barrytown Trilogy on film, which includes:

The Commitments
The Snapper
The Van

The Snapper in particular is wonderful film, though too adult for the kids.

Others with an Irish setting or origin:

The Quiet Man
Eat the Peach
Catholics


Of course, as mentioned above, Darby O'Gill and the Little People is the ultimate family Irish movie, even if a Scot (Sean Connery) does play a supporting role. However, when I was a kid, the banshee in the last half of the movie scared the hell out of me.

For what it's worth, there are a lot of interesting Irish directors, writers, and actors these days, though a lot of the films (Michael Collins, The Crying Game, etc.) are not for young children.

On edit, more recent Irish or Irish-themed films:

Evelyn
Bloody Sunday
The Laws of Attraction

The Hollywood of the '30s, '40s, and '50s had some great Irish or Irish-American talent, notably the aforementioned Ms. O'Hara.

31. Constant Gardener is excellent!
beautiful landscapes and great thought- provoking story.

I liked Walk the Line too. Rented it right when it came out.


The Snapper and The Commitments are wonderful, too.

I myself have a Woody Allen flick I haven't seen for tonight.

rent "The Magdalen Sisters." It's a light, heartwarming tale of a group of Irish girls who live together in a magical house that delights and surprises them. They learn about life and love and music and dancing. Fun for the whole family. Make sure you're kids watch the WHOLE thing.

25. Oh, God no.
I was hoping someone else would have seen it and reacted with horror to my post. It's about a convent/workcamp for fallen young women in 1950's (or 60's) Ireland. It is harrowing to say the least. I felt like I'd been hit by a bus when I left the theater.
I was joking around but no, that movie, however effective, is not for all ages. Peace.

The fact that Peter Mullan wrote and directed it is a tip-off. He's in the gritty realism school of British filmmaking, sort of like Ken Loach and Mike Leigh.

Worth seeing for adults, but not for escapism.

An Irish film with Colm Meany as an unempoyed factory worker who with a friend,buy a catering truck in Ireland. The storyline may sound a bit lame but its really a funny movie.

Though it deals with some serious themes, it is ultimately a gentle, life-affirming movie. Terrific performances, too, especially from the two young sisters who play Johnny and Sarah's young daughters.

With Orson Welles doing his impressive brogue, in a story about a woman's treachery and deceit. (Which was based on the real life relationship Welles had with that woman.)
