V for Vendetta - A goddamn good film

No spoilers here... just want to praise it for not being full of vapid cliches and easy ways out, but better than that - a goddamn good story, with a cast and performances to match.

Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman were fantastic, as were all of the supporting cast. At turns moving, darkly funny, wrenching, provocative, and exhilirating. I am not a fan of the Matrix films (as the screenplay and a few scenes give their source away), and can understand Alan Moore's reluctance to back a film of his wrk, but despite the changes made for the medium, it did no harm to the basic thrust of the story or its moral complexities. I grow weary of the false and whiny comparisons made between books and their cinematic interpretations (made by people who have never written their own screenplays or made an actual film), so spare me the grievances. Accept the film for what it is: A sincere and well-crafted re-telling of a gem in the comics canon. It stands up on its own quite well, and I will resist any comparison beyond that.

If you are curious, go see it. It's quite the tale, and will disturb and provoke in ways few films do anymore.
