What was the first music you bought with your own money?
Mine was Dreamboat Annie by Heart. I loved Heart, and sang along with every song on this record like a damn castrati.

I remember my mom taking me to buy it at K-Mart in 1976 for about $6.

The next record I bought was 52nd Street by Billy Joel.

So, what was the first music you bought with your own money?

8. Was 17 when I bought it,
And I'm still 17. Why did I not buy things before that? I never went to town, never went to any places were things were bieng sold. And where would I get the money? What work I did on the farm was unpaid, and I didn't get pocket money... so what could I buy? Then I got some money for either birthday or christmas, and went into town especially to buy something with it.. well actually, that and a few other things but hey... like I said, Country Bumpkin, Australian style.

P.S. Not any more, moved into the city and University 3 weeks ago!

41. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was Dylan, "Highway 61 Revisited", from
the University of Maryland Record Co-op.

Somewhere very close in there were "Quadrophenia" (The Who), and The Rolling Stones "Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)" and "Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)", and the Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour albums from the Beatles.

From the same, great, store.

50. This is EXTREMELY embarassing.
I bought a 45 of "Long Tall Sally" and "Tutti Frutti".

The first embarassment is that I am admitting that I'm quite old, relatively speaking. This purchase was all the way back in the mid-fifties.

But what is really embarassing is that the record was by Pat Boone, not Little Richard. I guess I was listening to this music on AM radio and in those days they were only playing the rip off covers of the real music. A few years later, I had learned who the real musicians were.... Little Richard, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly. I saw these guys live many times in the old Alan Freed R&R shows.

56. My turn
Approximately as embarrassing as speedoo's choice: the LP by the Hullaballoos.

They were one of those manufactured bands, put together to capitalize on Beatlemania. They were also a mop-top foursome, although their hair seems to have been blonde wigs intended for women to wear. Their hit was a Buddy Holly cover, but I didn't know that at the time. I bought the LP, thinking it would be ten equally cool tunes. This was when I was introduced to the concept of "filler." One of the tracks was a wretched cover of "Louie Louie," and that, I remember dimly, was one of the (few) rockers!

The *last* record I bought was the recently rediscovered tapes of the Thelonious Monk quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall. Obviously I have better taste now :P

65. I used to go see them on Sundays at the 7th Street Entry in the 80s
this was back before they got big. They were a fixture at First Ave/7th Street in late 80s. They played all ages Sunday shows all the time. So much, in fact, it was a joke among my friends that if we didn't have anything else to do on Sundays, we could always go catch Soul Asylum at the Entry!

Growing up in Minneapolis in the 80s totally spoiled me for music. Where else could you go see Husker Du, the Replacements, Soul Asylum or the Suburbs at the local clubs?

but before that, I had accumulated a very large 45 collection (large for a pre-teen, I should say). I still have most of them stored away.

A couple of the highlights:

"Heart of Glass" by Blondie (w/ picture sleeve)
"Sweet Talkin' Woman" by ELO (w/ picture sleeve, on clear purple vinyl)
"Dancin' Fool" b/w "Baby Snakes" by Frank Zappa (yes, it made the Top 40)

...plus a bunch of others I can't recall at this moment.
