1. Permalink gives one a quick way of copying a link
in a thread. Example, I want to email my friend one of the funny photoshops that pop up in here, I click permalink on the post, and then copy the link showing in the address window and paste it into the email. Voila!

2. I sure wish people would learn how to use it.

Correct way: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=315&topic_id=41153&mesg_id=41244
Find the post you want, right-click Permalink, then "Copy shortcut". paste that URL in the post to link directly to that post.

Sloppy way: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=315x41153#41244
This sloppy way works, provided nobody else posts above you after you link. But sometimes other stuff is added, and you lose your place... then you have to scroll up or down to figure out what it was that someone wanted you to see.

3. Actually a link to View All mode will point you to the proper message...
If you just let the page load without trying to scroll. Works on HTML anchors. It IS a pain in the ass if it's a long thread though.

5. It copies it to your system's clipboard.
If you are in any type of window where you can type, holding Ctrl and pressing V will paste the URL.

6. For us computer challenged
EVERYTHING must be explained!...OK....That works...BUT the only way PERMALINK can be used is to have TWO DU windows open at the same time?

7. I'm not sure what you mean...
Why would you need two DU windows open at the same time?

11. You don't necessarily have to have two windows open to do that...
You can find the post that you want to make the link to, copy the URL from the permalink, then go back to the other thread and post it. Might be quicker to do it with multiple windows open (or tabs, if you use Firefox or Opera) though.

9. 1. Right-click on PERMALINK,
2. a menu should pop up. Cick on "copy shortcut"
3. then "paste" to the message/post you're trying to write.

At least, that's how it works on Windows.

12. People don't use it
because no one understands what it's suppose to do. NOW, the way you originally explained it sounded like I was going to SEE a DIRECT URL to your post when the window open up. I didn't know I just needed to right click and it was in 'memory' directly to your post...NOW I have 2 ways to do this!
THANKS.....remember most of us are VERY computer challenged. I had no idea what a 'clip board' was!
