Colgate Buying Control of Tom's of Maine
NEW YORK - Consumer products maker Colgate-Palmolive Co. said Tuesday it agreed to purchase control of the privately-held Tom's of Maine, which makes "natural" toothpaste and other personal care products, for $100 million in cash.

The deal reflects Colgate's strategy of focusing on the higher-margin oral and personal care businesses.

3. Isn't the ultra free market wonderful?

I love how free-marketers stress competition but in the end all you get are giant conglomerates buying smaller competitors.

6. Why the heck do good companies...
like Tom's of Maine sell themselves (and their customers) OUT like that? Are they that fucking greedy?

Local baker Parisian sold out to a big ol' Arkansas company that owns Hostess. The company is now having financial trouble so they shut down Parisian entirely -- a baking company that had been providing San Francisco sourdough for over 125 years!

Pisses me off.
