4. May I just tell you, I like *your* (screen) name.
That is a GREAT name.

And I really like the name Zoe. It's just that it's not quite...unusual or significant enough for me.

7. Heh...
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 01:41 PM by Spider Jerusalem
when it comes to 'unusual or significant', I've always thought that if I were to father a daughter I'd want to name her either Lysistrata or Lilith (so maybe it's a good thing I don't plan on ever becoming a father)...

Oh, and my screen name is from the graphic novel Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson...set in a dystopian future tht's not so very different from our present, and the main character is a sort of Hunter S Thompson-type outlaw journalist who's on a mission to take down the psychotic, corrupt President.

9. You know, I had a *feeling* there was a graphic novel involved.
And I think either Lysistrata or Lilith would be a fine name. Seriously.

I think it would depend on the last name whether or not May would work as a middle name.

I like May, too.

On edit: How do you feel about the name Fallon? I love that name!

5. Joseph is the first name of one of my favorite writers, so...easy call.
Except, I don't love it overly much. But that particular Joseph's writing essentially saved my life, so at least I'd be able to like the name for that reason. And it has a lot of potential for good nicknames, Josie being one of them.

18. How 'bout a C&W name? ...Temple Star?
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 02:24 PM by SoCalDem
when our son was born, a roommate in the hospital named her daughter that..their last name GUNTER...their son was named Chevvie (where he was conceived??)..

She had to have her sister pick her up from the hospital..Dad got arrested..:eyes:

they actually brought BEER into the hospital for Mom..and when she got up from the bed, her sheets were stained from the fluorescent pink nightgown she had been sweating in for 2 days :puke:

I was glad to see her go :)

28. I picked six names I would name children
I wanted 3 girls.. Diane, Susan, Katherine

but I got

Scott, Michael & Steven

As someone who had the only "weird" name in the family, I made sure my kids had ordinary names.. I did not want the first thing a person thought of them, to be..weird name :)

They had little nicknames through the years, but I projected years ahead, and imagined those names on a business card, door or marquee :)

I have a friend whose daughter was one of SIX Tiffanys in kindergarten.. she ended up T-4..

29. HELP! Baby name CRISIS!
You know how they say that in anagrams lie all truth? Well all of the names I've considered for my hypothetical girl children so far anagram to very. bad. things. Very bad. I've never seen names anagram to things so embarrassing and vulgar. Except for Ann Coulter's. So...I will obviously need to choose some new names. Now.

34. (Rant): The current fashion of giving girl babies male names:
I cringe whenever I heard of a girl baby named Taylor, Avery, Madison, Jordan, Michael, and yes, Payton or Fallon.

What's the point? Aren't there enough girls' names available? Or did you secretly really want a boy? Or are you just NOT THINKING?

So the school officials look at the name on a list: Taylor Jordan Whooziwhatsiti, and they think, "Okay, which gym class does this kid go to?"

As an adult, she'll get mail addressed to Mr. Taylor Whooziwatsit.

Then there's the ever-shrinking supply of male names. The names Terry, Leslie, and Kim have already been appropriated as female names. Men given those names at the time just before it was "stolen" have to put up with letters addressed to Ms. Terry/Leslie/Kim Whooziwhatsit.

Leave some names for the guys, please, and don't inflict gender confusion on your newborn child. If she's transgendered, she'll tell you when she grows up.

37. Agreed. (Another rant)
I HATE, LOATHE, DETEST boy/genderless names for girls!

Stupid Southern-belle names like Madison, Shelby & Sloane (gag) drive me nuts. Those are names for Old English sheepdogs, not daughters!

I work with a woman whose children are Ryan, Weston and Chandler. Guess which 2 are girls and which is the boy?

Another woman at work has Sloane and Skylar. Are they boys or girls?

My girls are Genevieve & Meredith, BTW.

42. Of the names in the combinations, maybe Leslie Rose?
Yeah, I'm cheating and mixing up the first/middle pairs, but that's the best one I can think of. Maybe I just like this because I have a friend who has those as her first and middle names. (Although she spells Leslie like the guitar, Lesley; I prefer the "Leslie" spelling 'cause it's my mom's name. My mom didn't like it growing up, though, 'cause back then the "l-i-e" spelling was the "boy" spelling; however, I don't think there are many boys being named that anymore.)

I like Jean alright, though more as a middle name than a first name. I'm not too big on Josephine or Payton; Payton is a little better with a "Peyton" spelling, but then it makes me think of "Peyton Place", plus it just seems like a boy's name.

But really, all those are just my perceptions of the names based on various things, and everyone's going to have different ones. If I were you I'd just pick a name that has some meaning to you or sounds good to you. I've known some great people with names I didn't happen to like beforehand, who meeting changed my opinion of the name altogether.
