What do you do about an ex-friend that won't let go of you?
I guess I should have ended the friendship decisively, but instead I tried to let it just fade away, but not participating in it any more. I thought it was too risky to suddenly sever it which would cause pain and some kind of reaction. And for the most part, it worked, but he still calls me every few months and pretends that we're still friends and talks for about one minute. I answer politely but blandly and emptily with monosyllabic answers. I don't want to do anything to inflame or stir up anything bad. But he seems to not ever give up totally. This summer it will be 3 years since I decided to part ways. Maybe I should just try a different attitude?

2. Maybe you should be honest
You decided to part ways but he didn't decide that. He might not know what's up with you. Not knowing for sure has always caused anxiety for me. It is better for a person to be hurt for a moment and not have to worry about it anymore. The fact that you don't talk often and do things together should make it easier now for him. Tell the truth next time he calls.

13. Does he know where you live?
Would he show up on your doorstep? If not, maybe you could consider changing your phone number. I'm the same way, man. I am really bad at that stuff and I tend to run away rather than face it.

Otherwise I agree with those above who said if it's been 3 years and you rarely talk, then you can tell the truth and it shouldn't be a huge ordeal. Only you know what's best, man. Good luck.
