Okay, here we go. I have finally picked names for my hypothetical kids.

In the future, in the highly unlikely event that I have any children to name, I want to have as little hassle to deal with as I can manage WRT the naming process. It's just something that's been bugging me lately, what I would name her/him/them, that is, and I wanted to get it sorted out as much as is possible at this time. So, at long last, I've decided on some names. I found out that I just couldn't choose what most would consider "good names," so I decided to just go with the most tolerable names I really love. I tried to pick decent middle names, so if the kids absolutely despise their first names, they can be called by their middle names. No, I don't know what these names anagram to. I haven't considered their "school-yard taunt" potential. I don't care. Most people aren't exactly enamored with their names, I don't think. The kids will deal with it somehow, I'm sure.

Drumroll please...

If it's a girl: Agatha Arline. If there's a second kid and it's also a girl: Harriet Sharon.

If it's a boy: Alastair Joseph. If there's a second kid and it's also a boy: Fletcher Lewis.


So sue me.

My grandmother was an Agnes. Everyone called her Aggie, which is just not my style at all.

If we would have had children, our daughter would have been Justine, Lauren, or Natalie. Our son probably would have been either Jacob or Nathan. We didn't. I expend a lot of time and effort on cat names instead ;-).

Anyway we had picked Ainsley Elizabeth (Eliz. is a family name on my wife's side)

We had to scramble when we found out it was a boy... so we chose Ethan Paul (Paul is a family name on my side)

In the delivery room? (Ethan is a good name, by the way.)

so we didn't have near as much time to ponder, especially since we induced at 34 weeks.

Actually, that was why I went with Joseph as the middle name, there. I can live with the nickname AJ and I figured he might forgive me for the "Alastair" part if he could use AJ as a substitute.

Terrible that a mythical parent would do that to a mythical child.

The truth is, these were the names I loved, the others were just attempts to talk myself out of Agatha and Alastair. Sigh. Silly Iris.

I always wanted to name my daughter Geneva Alexandria, but when the husband and I finally did have to pick a name for our daughter, I could not get him to agree ("I don't want to name her after two cities I've never been to." was the gist of his objection). Our problem was that both our families had used the same set of female names (Mary, Agnes, Kathleen, Jamie, Jennifer) in various combinations and permutations. And the other name I would have liked, Kathleen for my aunt, my husband had used to name his daugher from his first marriage, so that was out. Since I'm a herald in the SCA, I have lots of books on names in the library, so we hit them hard. My husband's major qualification was that the name had to have a pronunciation relationship to the way it was spelled, which meant that most Irish and Scottish names were right out (for example, the name Siobhan is pronounced something along the lines of "sha vaughn"). We finally found a lovely Welsh name, Bethan, that we both liked and which yells nicely - always a consideration. We kept her middle name of Liang (the name she was given in the orphanage was Xie Li Liang) because we were told it meant bright and shining and my stepdaughter's middle name is Clare, which means something similar. We thought it was a nice way to bring the two children together. Of course, the minute after we got her, we started calling her "Boo" and only use Bethan when we really need to get her attention.

That's a GREAT name.
